Interesting to note that the average August temp. in Alex is 2.5C higher than July's, with the mean daily max. difference being 3.5C. Both these numbers are the highest for NZ, at least of the ones that I've seen. In northern and western parts of the North Island particularly, not only is August not much warmer than July, in the far north it's slightly cooler than June. In Alex. and Cromwell records there is a big jump in sunshine from July to August - must be far fewer fogs in the latter. Decades ago we noticed that school holiday conditions in August, even at the start, were much pleasanter than July and could often feel springlike in the daytime.

Yep: Coldest time of the year here is mid June to the end of July, after this time usually the weather patterns start to shift to more westerly to North-westerly air flow, so more periods of warmer temps plus more sunshine hrs and a higher sun. We will still get a cold spell or two, but less fog days and as you can see the temps do start to climb.

yes, for up this way, August is only a bit warmer than july (aveage temperatures) ,as the sea temperatures are not starting to increase until september or later....where inland areas the ground heats up the air as the sun gets higher in the sky

there was a good burst of heavy rain here at 1am, 29mm in total from this system, and only 36 hours after being at 1036hpa too!
also surprisingly cold at 8oC for a NW wind behind the front too!

63mm overnight and rain heaviest this morning up to 62mm/hr at one stage... and another period showed 10mm/min, surface water everywhere... footpaths are rivers on the slopes... look at the graph on my website... _| and mild with it. I think oernight low was only 9.8ºC, the current temp but it just dropped from about 11 as the rain came

The differences [Aug-June and Aug-July] with Alexandra (particularly) and Cromwell are considerably higher than anywhere else in the SI hinterland outside Central Otago, even though many of those places are also quite a long way from the sea. In some of those places the seasonal range is similar to that of Central Otago.

The exposure of the Clutha basin to Nor Westers possibly plays a part in that? Directing the warm winds down valley to Cromwell and Alex, could be interesting to do a comparison with somewhere like the Ida Valley.

yes, its like a continental climate, gets nice and cold when the sun heating is at its lowest (june 21) and then hottest when the suns heating is at is max (21 dec dec)
(i.e the minium and maximum temperature follow closer to the sun than places closer to the oceans (as the ocean temperature lags way behind the sun)

I think we've had 1 or 2 frosts this whole winter that I can recall. Ive only had to clean ice of the windscreen once all winter.. pretty mild so far

-0.4ºC this morning - a light late dusting and a beautiful day baro steady on 1021-1022 all day, highest average was 20kms/hr, and now its around 12kph. I wish I rode my bike to work now... although its a part head wind heading home... Max temp was 17.3ºC - mmm spring has arrived - I think... the willows are budding up now... more lawns to mow right now...

Very cold here 5° this morning 8/8 making it feel colder than yesterday.The minimums forecasted in the newspaper are considerably higher than whats were getting however.

I never find the minimums in the paper a very good guide for what to expect where I live, the forecast temperatures would obviously be based around the records of official Auckland data (airport), which is considerably warmer at night than it is here and is probably only accurate around the airport and city areas. Lows here are normally 2-3C lower, but under certain conditions can be up to 6C lower (local winds at the airport) or once it was 5C higher (local winds here).

Disappointed with frosts here this year, only 2 ground frosts and 1 screen frost, compared to last year which had 16 days ground frost (lots of mornings with lows 0-1C) and 4 days screen frost here.
