Severe Easterly storm & Flooding, upper NI, 9 - 13th Jul

Unread post by Razor »

Gee whizz, the hint of drizzly sleety snow for 5 mins in ChCh and this forum goes mad.

A major weather warning of 200mm plus of rain and 130km winds in the north has yet to register a thread here.

Time to fix that, I hope those northern folk have tidied the garden rubbish, cleared the drains, tied up the boats and battened down the hatches. Thye've had their fair share of drama already this year.

Northland is used to stormy weather from all quarters , e.g they have in the past been really reammered by ex tropical cyclones.
Yes, this easterly storm is looking like its going to be a doozy all right!

Already mentioned several times in this thread about an easterly thrashing for Coramandel to Northland ;)
Manukau heads observer wrote: in the past in these egg beater situation, the easterlies have reached 80kts (150kmh or so) in a line from the top of the coromandel penininsular to the kaipara harbour area

if the squash zone can move further south then towns downslope of the coromandel/mt tearoha kamai range are in for a battering (been a long time since they had a big easterly)......and even this far west we can get a bounce effect off the hunua ranges
Foggy wrote: Seems as though the blocking high is starting to get established to the SW of NZ, thus shifting cyclonegenesis (love that word!) westwards toward Northland more, rather than the NSW coast in June.

Will only probably see occasional drizzle from this system here.. with more falling as you head north. I wonder how high these easterlies are going to get though?!
Both in this thread here...
http://www.weatherforum.org.nz/forum/vi ... 5577#45577

So we do understand and are discussing the upcoming effects already...

We'll keep with this thread then too ... ;)

Was meant to be more a dig at the over the top reaction to the boring ChCh weather!

But yea...this event defintely deserves a thread, I hope its not as bad as the one a couple of months back up there.

I've been keeping my eye on this one , it looks quite a nasty one especially if it hits the North Island on the west coast. All indications at the moment are looking like the Auckland region will get a pounding, lets just hope it stays on the predited path and does not move further south. :(

Oooh! That's a bit mean....

Not that we would wish an ugly storm on the SI - ;) Although some seem to want it

Just batten down the hatches up north and keep plenty of fresh water stored... and batteries and dry wood, and matches... - oh, and tie down the caravans (I think ours is the same vintage, size and make as the one in the Taranaki news recently

Still calm here in Sth Waikato.

That's what I was remembering of Gisborne across to central NI when we lost a whole area of trees in several places. Broken useless sticks left standing and the other half just as useless in a tangle on the ground... Kinleith Forest...

You can see the sheltering Central and South Auckland have on an Easterly flow today by the lack of low level cloud. Have light to mod rain from medium level cloud cover.

Not much wind here at low level

Just In
{WATCH Event 2007/1.147}
SEVERE WEATHER WATCH FOR NORTHERN GISBORNE ISSUED BY METSERVICE AT 1102hrs 10-Jul-2007

HEAVY RAIN AND STRONG WINDS POSSIBLE FOR NORTHERN PARTS OF GISBORNE ON WEDNESDAY

A deep low is forecast to pass northern New Zealand later today and during Wednesday, bringing heavy rain and potentially damaging winds to the north of the North Island as per the latest Severe Weather Warning. There is a slight risk that the low may take a more southerly track on Wednesday, which could result in heavy rain and severe southeast gales for northern parts of the Gisborne region.
MetService forecasters will continue to monitor the situation and advise people in the area to remain up to date with the latest forecasts in case this watch is upgraded to a full warning.

This Watch will be reviewed by 9pm Tuesday 10th July 2007 Forecast prepared by: Andy Downs
