This has been up and running on the website since I've been back on the Internet, on line as some people call it.
I see the Invercargill radar is out of action for a week.

Yes, good news to hear that the Goverment has approved 10m expenditure on 3 additional rain radars for the North Island. The coverage hole over the BOP and central NI has always been a nuisance for storm watchers.

I understand the new Bay of Plenty Rain Radar is going to be on Puwhenua (S 37° 55.601 E 176° 7.059 WGS84), at a height of 622m between Tauranga and Rotorua.

I beleive there isn't going to be one at Napier, it'll be closer to Gisborne.

West Coast, South Island
I would add Otago to the list of regions with inadequate radar coverage.

Would they setup a Wx stn there that I/we could use as a reference I wonder?

Yes you are right, Central Otago, but then they don't get all that much rain so a couple of million dollar Dopplar rain radar system for the area would be unessesary, unless it could leap over mountains and show us Fjordland's rainfall???

I just had a wee look, now that the Auckland and Invercargill rain radars are up and running again, the Gisborne area, NE Cape area, needs one.
With this, now the whole country will be covered.
Why is one needed for the central NI and Taranaki, when the Auckland and Wellington radars are capable to cover those areas?

It may not look like it, but the Bay of Plenty isn't that well covered. The Auckland Radars beam is too high up and misses out on quite a bit of our rain. There are also areas shaded by topography.

The same would apply to other regions.

I beleive there may be up to 6 more radars installed in the next 10 years. The BOP one may still be 2 years off.

Oh! OK then, well, then you need one up there then. Yes, the more the merrier I suppose, especially if topography is a problem with Dopplers, but then someone may event a rain radar that is worked by, say a sattelite rather than a land based system. 8)
