Why didn't you know already? You're a professional weatherologist! Even I knew about it weeks ago and I'm generally considered to be as ignorant as it gets.RWood wrote:I´m almost dumbfounded (would be a first for me)

I´ve been out of the country for a few weeks - though my recent requests (last several months) have been granted free so I suspected something like this was coming. And I´m not a professional...

wow, this is great stuff. was this expected? certainly in the UK there has been lots of debate about free access to government related databases (and ultimately already funded by the taxpayer). Anyone know why the change in policy at NIWA?

It was not NIWA's choice, as I understand it. The Government told them to do it, or so I was told.protonplayer wrote:wow, this is great stuff. was this expected? certainly in the UK there has been lots of debate about free access to government related databases (and ultimately already funded by the taxpayer). Oh You beauty mate - fantastic indeed. Having total fun downloading & printing heaps of data especially Invercargill and Auckland & also couldn't resist the urge to download Milford Sound, Greymouth, Hokitika and Stewart Island rain datas seeing I'm a big fan of those lovely rains This has made me a very happy fella at the moment.

me too! busy downloading the station data from near where I grew up , River Park in Henderson, Akl... that Auckland station that often has the highest or lowest Auckland temperatures and comparing against the 4 years of records I took whilst living there before my parents moved to the considerably less exciting weather of Mt Roskill in Auckland

I'll restrain my excitement until I see what happens to the cost of the Digest (monthly summary and selected station data).

Re: National Climate Database open for free access! :)
for janewaystv: If you want any of your rainfall (or raindays, temp, wind or sunshine) downloads turned into some graphs of the type I've sent you previously, just email the data over to me in Excel format (preferably). I'm no "rainfan" as you know , but the data would be quite interesting anyway. I'll being looking for stuff like Chch gardens rainfall, with the station's very long record.

Re: National Climate Database open for free access! :)
All sounds great, but I'm still in dialup, so does it take long to download? I also wonder if, as well as data, there are any written accounts of months etc. (say like the old NZ Gazette monthly summaries)

Re: National Climate Database open for free access! :)
Download should be quite fast even on dialup unless your data request is very large.
I'd be surprised if there were any archived written reports like the old Gazette summaries or the current Digest - but I'd ask to make sure.

Don't think that will restrict you much. You can get a couple of million lines of tables' worth, or the equivalent, before anything stops you, as I understand it. Then you can just renew I think.

OK, here's the first step. Get registered. Remember, now it's all free for standard data access (if you want to do some calculation that's not already stored they will make a small charge to do it for you).
