Low early week
Looks like a shallow low pressure system will cross the upper North island early week.
Upper air is quite cold so rainfall in this system will be enhanced by convection although the air doesn't look overly moist.
Looks like Gisborne/Hawkes Bay may see the worst from this system on Tuesday with a strong rainy onshore E/SE flow.

I'm in the Bay of Islands, light rain here with the odd brief heavy shower moving through.

Re: Low early week
Do other countries have winters like ours? One week during the entire season when you'll get some cold temperatures, a little snow, some action weather in the North and then basically it's all over?
Just curious.

Re: Low early week
Well I mean that the action weather seems to be confined to a very brief period (a couple of weeks or less) then it's a gentle stroll into spring. (With the odd short detour into a day or so of light snow or a nice little storm.)Manukau heads observer wrote:what do you mean all over?
We certainly don't get all-winter winters like many other countries.

Re: Low early week
but August is traditionaly the snowiest month
also its only half way through winter (15th July) so dont know why you are talking about spring already

Re: Low early week
Perhaps that's true up north. It's not down here.Manukau heads observer wrote:but August is traditionaly the snowiest month
Well because it seems as if the worst is behind us. The winters of 2004, 2005 and 2006 were also like this: the worst was early in winter (2004 & 2005 barely even had a "worst") with the rest of the season being very uneventful.also its only half way through winter (15th July) so dont know why you are talking about spring already
Maybe that's just down here though.

Re: Low early week
depends on what you call winter
if you mean cold night time temperatures due to large slow moving highs with little wind, then ,yes, the SI tends to get those earlier in winter
but if you mean windy squally weather (e.g NI winter) then the worst is still to come

I guess I mean actual (interesting) winter events versus the more general definition of winter.Manukau heads observer wrote:depends on what you call winter
The South Island action weather has been and gone and there wasn't a lot of it.
Shorter days and lower temperatures just don't do it for me!

Re: Low early week
The U.K. can have boring rainy winters, it's not until January that things get really exciting, usally with some good anticyclones that are really deep, then in February and March we can get some good dumpings of snow ,but these are usually down the East coast straight from the arctic.Fogs and hoar frosts are the best, they have to be seen to be be appricated.April is just mainly wet but we can get some brilliant tempratures when we get a warm southerly wind coming up from MorrocoGary Roberts wrote:Do other countries have winters like ours? Re: Low early week
Yeh although the last few winters in the UK have been interesting from I have heard with big rainfalls high winds and some good snow storms. Of course summer can be great for thunderstorms too especailly the good old electrical storms, just look storms up on you tube and alot of the good lightning ones are from the UK.
Your right Gary considering you have atleast had some dumpings of snow already this winter which means all the more for us now .
Cheers
Jason.

Re: Low early week
UK has a very interesting climate however poor visibilities often make the UK a very poor place for weather watching esp in summer.

Re: Low early week
Yes, UK can have interesting weather but it is not in the same league as the USA, that's the country to live in if you want to see some interesting weather!
This low system moving onto the North Island should give some good snow to Ruapehu ski areas next few days.

Yes, my brother has moved to Dexter in Missouri. It's at the NE end of 'tornado alley'.NZstorm wrote:Yes, UK can have interesting weather but it is not in the same league as the USA, that's the country to live in if you want to see some interesting weather!
Yes, the weather may be interesting there but I would rather live in NZ, well here in Canterbury and face the boring weather we continually get here, sorry

Re: Low early week
so then maybe you should say in your statement, for my local area, otherwise it sounded like a blanket statement for NZ

Re: Low early week
Must admit I would love to see some of the storms they get in the U.S. but i don't mind boring weather too,I like the unpredictable nature of weather and if its exciting but not too vicious its a bonus,I would'nt like too lose my house to it but I don't mind things coming to a bit of a stand still and the ensuing chaos it causes to the running of a country, it's just a man against nature thing if you know what I mean? I know not a lot of Farmers would agree with my thoughts ,especially if they lose stock and crops and I do feel for them when that happens but I think as time will tell, things will get better in the prediction of weather pattens and in avoiding some of the bad things the weather throws at us.

Winter Action Weather for the whole of New Zealand is generally confined to very short periods in my opinion.Manukau heads observer wrote:so then maybe you should say in your statement, for my local area, otherwise it sounded like a blanket statement for NZ

Re: Low early week
Its not going to happen going by lastest looks... The 6am Metvuw run shows a big fat high in the central tasman as a much more dominant feature for the weekend than before and any southerly flow will only be a weak one one.03Stormchaser wrote:Im up Hamner way this weekend, could snow over the sat night into sunday!

Expect fine frosty weather in Hanmer at this stage
