Re: 20th-21st July Weekend - Low and Cold snap
Just got back from Port Hills. Light showers and 5 degrees at the top. In town showery and 8 degrees. Metservice have now scrubbed sleet from forcast, minimum temp now as high as 4.
Put the snow shoes away
Little bit disappointed that some here don't have a sense of humour/ fun though, I thought this forum was more than a bread and butter report of what the weather is doing/ has done/ will do.

Re: 20th-21st July Weekend - Low and Cold snap
Absolutely zilch happened down here. It fined up overnight and got moderately chilly, but certainly nowhere near the year's record low. And it goes without saying that there was no snow at all.

No, the McKenzie country is a heartbreking place for weather enthusiasts to live! Its not our fault that you choose to live in a place where it only snows in June.Gary Roberts wrote:New Zealand is a heartbreaking place for weather enthusiasts to live.
Given the reports on here of sleety showers overnight, Gopolks, I think you owe MetService an apology. There was a very light smattering of snow down to about 300m on Mt Grey overnight and some light sleety showers here, but pretty much all gone now, just the cloud left. This whole event has gone very close to what was forecast (both by Blue Skies and MetService). It would be nice if once in a while you acknowledged that, to counter balance all the moaning and groaning you do prior to the event occurring.gopolks wrote:Why the heck are the metservice still saying sleetly showers, you would think they would of changed thier forcast.
Next front coming through Monday night - could be worth keeping an eye on.

Re: 20th-21st July Weekend - Low and Cold snap
Hah! Lemme see now. On average, the entire country gets a semi-decent snowfall once a year at best. The NI gets perhaps one semi-decent thunderstorm per year, at best. There's sometimes a flood, then maybe a drought, and this year was good for tornadoes. And that's it.TonyT wrote:...the McKenzie country is a heartbreking place for weather enthusiasts to live! Other countries have all-winter winters, with snowfalls metres deep which last six month or more. They get lots of huge storms every year and tornadoes are commonplace. Temperatures range from bone-crackingly cold to brain-meltingly hot.
NZ is a heartbreaking place to be if you're an Action Weather junky, but pretty damn good for everybody else!
So you owe me yet another slobbering apology, several million dollars in cold, hard cash and a medal. So there. Take that. Nyah nyah.

Well if it got snow to 300 metres in some parts of canterbury, then sorry to the metservice, in my part of chch we only had rain, the port hills didnt get one flake, and I can only see a lvery light dusting on the tops of bank penisula.

Re: 20th-21st July Weekend - Low and Cold snap
But seriously - I can't see how NZ weather can be described as boring, taken overall. Not life-threatening in the way some places get it, but at least fickle - annoyingly endowed with the ability to make any holiday planning that is weather-based a dicy business. I don't like long spells of dull and/or drizzly conditions so can understand the moans coming from many Cantabrians this month...but as I said earlier I think such a month was a little "overdue".

Re: 20th-21st July Weekend - Low and Cold snap
The presence of a ridge over the South Island was always likely to dampen down the effects of this latest cold snap.
The next cold snap due Tuesday morning should bring a bit of snow to 300m in Southland/south Otago before the coldest air heads out to sea. And the deep instability stays well clear of the South Island.

Oh well....maybe next time. Saw a bit of sleet this morning, but just trace amounts as it bounced off my patio furniture...
Well done to Fencepost and M/S
I have noticed something strange this morning...a big, shiny, orangish-yellow orb in the sky... seems to be providing warmth.........
(About time, really...I've been sick of the gray murk we've had of late...)

I was watching free to air and checking the forums during the commercials and saw your post....

More than just very light around Akaroa - 'moderate' dusting above about 350m with a little sleet at lower levels.and I can only see a lvery light dusting on the tops of bank penisula.
