Currently overcast with a cold southerly and below double figures, I am not sure wether it will stick around for long until that strong E-NE comes in otherwise it could be another angle to look at perhaps :) .
Heavy rain warning out for Christchurch by MS looks like south canterbury and Otago will see quite abit flooding material, especailly those soils which are rather dry.
Cheers

East Otago certainly looks in line for a soaking.

I notice the Coromandal ranges rainguages have almost cranked up 100mm from several hours rainfall. Thats heavy stuff.

Weather trying to clear up in Auckland.

So far we have had over 20mm rain but the rain rate has been as high as 20mm/hr. Pretty steady stuff with the baro flettening out at 1004hPa. Temp still at a max of 12.9ºC, wind still ave ~5km/hr but swung to the north.

Son was trialling for U13 rugby in the thick of it. Brought him home with hot F&C for all - yes! He's in the team... Fire is also going ;)

I looked at the rain forecaster graph on Met rural, and bang, 3pm Monday, a tornado of rain has its sights set plumb on Dunedin's central Post Office. Pretty dry ground will soak up quite a few mils before theres any spillover, I think.

Unlike the sodden North there's not much heavy rain in these parts - ever - and I'm praying like a drought-stricken farmer that it does eventuate.

It would be fair to say that heavy prolonged rain is very uncommon in Dunedin. Although i can recall several events over the years. It is certainly very steady and driving rain out there at the moment. I think we are in for a serious soaking.

Rain has begun in central Chch this evening after a mostly dull but dry day, but only light stuff so far.

Not even light drizzle where I am, but I will probably wake up to find a boat with two of each animal floating past.

Absolutely hosing down here in Burwood (CHCH) now...not sure what the meteorological term would be for that...
So, just as it has been predicted to do so, so no real surprises!

I've been in Oamaru all day and it was drizzling the whole day, but only lightly. The ground in Omarama was damp when we left this morning although it wasn't raining. The drizzle began in earnest once we'd passed through Otematata and were heading towards Aviemore.

This is certainly heavy rain by ChCh standards. A few hours of this and there will be problems...I hope its cold enough up on the skifields to save their seasons

thundery rain as in it's thundering down, but without the sound of thunder

...anyway hosing down here or pelting down or whatever expression you may want to choose :)
Interesting late this afternoon, I noticed whilst shovelling horse poo, that despite the surface wind coming from the SW the cloud layer changed and was coming in from the ENE. This eventually rose the lower stratus layer from the SW to complete dissipation. :-k
