Sat Image shows a really beefy line thats just starting to drop large rain drops as i type.
I'm surprised to hear the thunder that I did before, i think it may have been an isolated strike...

Re: Rain and westerly change, 4 - 7 Aug
Nice heavy shower laced with hail moved through Papanui around 10am, didn't surprise me to see some ice fall from those clouds after a light frost this morning. May have even had some sleety showers if the breif belts came through earlier.
Now to look forward to the warmer NW days ahead .
Cheers
Jason.

A good example of Thundery showers today, heavy showers with just one or two thunder claps.
Felt like the middle of winter today for a change.

Sounds like one heck of a hail storm in Wanganui last night going by tv one breakfast news, substantial damage to a hardware warehouse. Any reports from good old Wangas?

Wanganui Chronicle about Hail
This was from this mornings Chronicle newspaper
Hailstorm hammers hardware store
08.08.2007
By ANNE-MARIE EMERSON
THE HAILSTORM that pelted Wanganui yesterday morning caused serious damage to at least one Wanganui business.
The Fire Service was called to assist staff at Mitre 10 Mega's Taupo Quay store about 10.30am, when hailstones clogged the internal guttering system and overflowed, causing the roof to buckle.
Store manager Hayden Gibson said there was considerable water damage to the store's office block.
Part of the ceiling had to be taken out and items such as carpets and computers were damaged.
"It will probably end up being quite expensive in dollar terms," Mr Gibson said.
He said the store was not affected and business continued as usual.
Station officer Gary Wilson from the Wanganui Fire Brigade, said firefighters carried out a salvage operation.
"There wasn't anything we could do, other than preventing further damage.
"We covered valuable equipment with tarpaulin to help stop the hail getting on to it."
Mr Wilson said problems caused by hailstone blockages were not uncommon.
Residents throughout the city reported drifts of hailstones piling up against walls and buildings, but there were no other reports of damage.

Re: Rain and westerly change, 4 - 7 Aug
Thunder and hail probably affected many western areas of the North Island yesterday - probably extra convection in the front. Snow levels probably came lower than predicted in the central NI last night too, with the Desert Road closed and other nearby highways icy.
