Re: Last Cold Front Coming for the year?
We are still in winter and cold fronts continue all year round but i know what you mean Gopolks perhaps a last gasp for a cold blast. Although as over the years have proven snow can still fall to relativly low levels right through until December.
I think the storm season for Canterbury may start a little earlier this year especailly if we keep getting these lows crossing down from the north, ill take that for sure .
This next system looks like a good solid typical low for August, gale warm NW winds for a few days with breif rain on Saturday followed by a colder SW change on Sunday, one to keep an eye on indeed.
Cheers
Jason.

Re: Last Cold Front Coming for the year?
Yes and with all these warmer seas aswel will make a difference too storm season in a good way
I say expect the odd very cold outbreak too continue right through until the end of September. As jasetrm mentioned we can get snow in spring, like in 2005 19th, but tomorrow should be nice and warm and i wouldn't mind summer too roll on either.

Re: Last Cold Front Coming for the year?
The last low-level snowfall in Canterbury last year was in early/mid November, and that came pretty close to Chch. (Weedons) I've read that it has snowed in Chch in early December, way back in the 1920s, but that would be pretty exceptional. As jasetrm mentioned we can get snow in spring, like in 2005 19th, but tomorrow should be nice and warm and i wouldn't mind summer too roll on either.

Re: Last Cold Front Coming for the year?
Looks like a big high over NZ next week which will be a change from the unsettled weather we have been getting.
Warmer sea temperatures should mean a warmer spring and summer. But the country is due for a La Nina which may start later this spring. Wellington will get the best weather on a La Nina, east coast will be the wettest.

Re: Last Cold Front Coming for the year?
This might well be the last gasp of winter but dont take it for granted,Northwest gales were followed by snowstorm in south
on 2-3 July 1999, and also Northwest gales in South Island were followed by cold snap on 16-18 November 2003.Both these events were quite similar.

Almost looks sleety here now. A small amount of snow can be seen on Mt Cargill

Re: Last Cold Front Coming for the year?
Looked rather unstable to the W-SW before with towering CU all over the place.
Just looked at tracker for a check and there has been a few recent strikes, wouldnt rule out those typical thundery showers as much as John hates the term .
Currently 11C with a fresh NE wind.
Cheers
Jason.

Re: Last Cold Front Coming for the year?
Well nothing at all happened down here. It was a lovely spring day until quite late, then a bank of cloud passed over briefly early this evening and now it's back to mostly clear again. Very little wind or rain. Hopefully you guys get some Action Weather out of it.

Re: Last Cold Front Coming for the year?
Welcome to the forum, bent!
Yes, especially this August and late July... things have been very warm here with atleast 4 days getting over 17C in the period.
I think it could be put down to origin, SE Aus has been having a bumper ski season with the southerlies... then giving NZ the northwesterlies coming in off the NW Tasman sea. Northeasterlies will always be moist, and the Pacific in that direction is fairly warm.

Re: Last Cold Front Coming for the year?
Hi bent. Yep, continuing the general trend. Aside from the odd skewing event, each winter has been a little warmer than the preceding for the last few years.
Higher average temperatures, fewer snowfalls and smaller quantities, as well as rising snowlines.
It's been t-shirt weather down here for weeks!
