Re: Big SI northwesterly storm 10th/11th Aug
Yep, a bit of lightning over the divide last night. We got some rain and much of the snow that was evident before it is now gone. I'd say Lake Ohau's season is almost done for. Good to hear the more southern fields got some. They've had absolutely bugger-all this season. People were saying Ohau had the best conditions and even they were scratching to keep it going, so I'd hate to think how crappy the fields were down Central way. Oh well, at least a bunch of skiers were unhappy, that's the main thing.

Re: Big SI northwesterly storm 10th/11th Aug
Strong gusty westerly here now not quite gale force yet though, clouds closing in from the west too.
Up to 19C here before, looks like a few thunderstorms in the mix of the heavy rain on the coast at the moment.
Could be the odd clap of thunder tomorrow late afternoon/evening along the windchange with heavy showers or hail .
Cheers
Jason.

Well, very odd. Yesterday Ohau skifield was closed because of high winds and heavy rain. Today they say they are closed because of "heavy snowfalls". Whichever direction I look I see bare landscape where snow had been before the rain and winds. I suppose it's possible they experienced some unusual localised weather.

I see metservice is forecasting snow for canterbury high country for monday with a free air freezing level of 400m. Isn't that almost snow to sea level when its that low?

Re: Big SI northwesterly storm 10th/11th Aug
Looks like some undercutting by cold air in the far south - snow forecast to 300m tomorrow; probably already down to that level.Down to 3 degrees now and a bit of heavy sleet.
Cooling down abit in Chch with the cloud, but still in the mid teens.

Very strong NW here at West Melton. Gusts up to gale force. Blew over my Stevenson's Screen!
Thankgoodness the instuments weren't damaged.
Wind seemed to die down now. I just tapped the barometer and it went down.

Re: Big SI northwesterly storm 10th/11th Aug
Clearing from the North now ,can see cloud all along the Alps, see picture, looking cloudy to the south as the front moves up,baro now 982 and still falling, wind mainly Northly to North Eastly but veering NW during gusts 6.5kph.Would not take to much notice of the wind as theres a tree in the way when its a N-NW blowing and anyway its not the recommended 10m in the air

Re: Big SI northwesterly storm 10th/11th Aug
Nice rain band to the west, tonight, when returning back up Hoskyns road from shopping at Rolleston.
Expecting some flashes in the Alps this evening but haven't seen any so far.
The cold front lies from Hokitika to Timaru at about 8pm tonight. Unfortunately, things look likely to be winding down
Shouldn't be much when the southerly comes through tomorrow but it should become cold and frosty when the 1040hPa anticyclone moves over us next week
It will be either anticyclonic gloom with the 1040, or just fine and clear

Yes SW here now with an associated temperature drop.
Substantial rain on the 10pm radar, south of the Ashburton river, mostly out to sea.
Probaly miss here ?
Barometer rising but not leaping up with the cold front moving over.
