How long winter will go
Whats your opinions about winter?
I reckon it will go quite a bit longer probably bringing storms to heated land soon by the increasing sun hours in lee of prevailing winds but all the SH continents like S America,S Africa and even Australia are all wallowing still in below 20° temps and it wont till ie Santiago gets 6° to 31° range that it will start to change.(this hasnt yet)These are my views, others will differ?

Re: How long winter will go
Do you mean this winter, Michael? How's it been up there? Does it still feel like winter in Auckland or the NI? Down here in the Mackenzie it's been spring (or spring-like if you prefer) for some weeks.Michael wrote:Whats your opinions about winter?

Or do you think that with the warmer land temps we've been experiencing (at least down here) we'll get some interesting weather because you expect more cold blasts from the south? Not disagreeing, just trying to get my head around the question.

Nah, winter temps are in the minus double figures, whereas -5.8 °C is just a chilly spring day!Manukau heads observer wrote:you had something like -5oC just yesterday morning Gary?

Re: How long winter will go
I've all ways found the case of the winters length depends on how it develops at the start, usually if it starts really cold and sudden it tends to burn quickly, significant snow, frost and for a shorter period, if it starts warm it just stays like that through the whole season with no significant issues but of average length, but if it starts late and unusually hot,it makes up for it at the end of winter with some sort of final act but slightly longer, I've really not been in New Zealand long enough to gauge the winters here.

Re: How long winter will go
Well, no, I can talk about it now. The idea that seasons run to a calendar, or by the length of a daay, is outmoded, I believe. If the weather is "spring-like" near the end of what is usually winter, it's probably spring. That holds true for all seasons in my opinion.Manukau heads observer wrote:in another 13 days you can start talking about spring gary
Perhaps not where you live, but down here it's been typical of very early spring.certainly not a spring weather pattern over the last few days

Re: How long winter will go
yes, when you get a weather pattern that brings warmer than normal temperatures at the end of the winter period, then yes you can say, its an early spring weather pattern
that is not happening at the moment

Re: How long winter will go
It would better with 2° to 10° still with sunshine but think those colder temps are over now this year rather than 8° to 15 with rain and wind however but this winter hasnt been too bad to now because the lack of SW but the jetstream is moving down slowly.

Re: How long winter will go
Has Winter arrived?? Ive found this winter to be particularly mild, and wet . Although, maybe the fact that I live in Edinburgh for a year has made this winter in Auckland seem particulalry mild. Lows of 10 degrees are pretty lame in the middle of winter. More like edinburghs tail end spring weather!

yup, in this part of the country, if it gets below 10oC, is considered cold!!

Re: How long winter will go
We dont really get it that cold often,It can be lows of 10 or 11° in June,October and April, though it seldom goes under 10 as a minimum in summer, more like 14 to 18 can be common though summer maximums can vary from 16° when its either raining or a SW flow to 28° ocassionally with light N from a good anticyclone sometimes.

Re: How long winter will go
Winter temperatures seem to very a lot in Auckland. Here in Howick we get frosts every year, whereas much other Auckland areas don't get frost, even 2km away from me
Lowest this year was -1.0 on 23rd July. Anyone else in Auckland notice these variations?
I also notice we get more rain here, 867mm so far this year. Can't complain about that
ps new to the forum
