Re: Cold outbreak, first week of September
Light rain continuing in central Chch, but up to 5C now. Snow came close to the western outskirts of city. Should get colder (as if 5C isn't very cold anyway) this evening; still shouldn't be clearing up until tomorrow.

Re: Cold outbreak, first week of September
You would never think there was a cold outbreak down there today from up here...
...19C here and climbing now that the sun is peeking through the clouds, gusty NW winds as well, very warm outside
So typical, rain appears on the rain radar out to the west, and then it moves with a southwards component to it and misses us so it will rain south of Auckland!!
After this event temps are forecast to get very cold....

Well its partly cloudy, fresh cool breeze and only 24 degrees up here in Rarotonga. The cold outbreak has even reached here. I'm supposed to be landing in ChCh tomorrow morning....

Region report
Just returned from a little run for work: Left at 12:00 got back at 16:00
Filmed a little bit for tonights News but not much.
About 12 B Train Trucks on top of porters pass, 4 Milk tankers stuck in sleet on way up. They all freed themselves and got moving a 13:00
Turned left at top of porters to go through the 4wd road to Coleridge where there was about 4-6 inches of snow on road and paddocks.
Arrived at turn off to alke Ida, Ryton station, Mount Olympus and snow disappeared. Level righ up at 600 metres (My guess) None on ground at all in valley.
Head to Methven and there WAS snow there but very minimal now only about 1/2 inch! (Mount Hutt looks OK though)
Snow completely disappeared about 5 km's east of Methven.
It will merely be a small metion on the news tonight.

Re: Cold outbreak, first week of September
It's been raining very steadily here for the past couple of hours.
I never thought it was going to snow during daytime, nighttime snowfall has always looked more promising on the models...except for the amount of previpitation.Aggggh!!!

Re: Cold outbreak, first week of September
We must be lucky here because there has been rain for most of the day (albeit sometimes light), and it is only easing now.

Re: Cold outbreak, first week of September
Nope, no thunder I've heard...the chance was never great but I did hope there was going to be...
...mind you, there still could be some. I don't think the second change has come yet.

Don't give up hope when there is a low risk, I had one one my most active heaviest thunderstorms here when the risk was assessed as low (but it was isolated)

Re: Cold outbreak, first week of September
Yes, but this one is supposed to happen just off the coast, and I am 20km inland, so I don't think there is much chance...

Re: Cold outbreak, first week of September
Was sleeting at work around 11 am today, no sign of real snow yet, but reports in that it has been snowing today in hornby and at chch airport I say the coldest part is yet to come still, and that will be packed with icy showers, possible thunder and hail.
Just wait on.
cheers

Re: Cold outbreak, first week of September
I'm going to be until early hours of the morning anyway, doing some NCEA thing due tomorrow ...I do think it will be a cold change (though no sign of it down south yet in terms of temps... ) but the precipitation is the main worry, I still think.

Re: Cold outbreak, first week of September
Had sleet falling around 11am in Harewood with some light flakes floating in briefly which was good considering I didnt expect it too.
The next front can be seen clearly on the 5pm radar with some icy showers in south canty, so the colder air is on its way in my books .
Cheers
Jason.

Yes, but the temps don't agree. 8 in Timaru, 9 in Dunedin, 7 in Invercargill. I don't know.

Re: Cold outbreak, first week of September
6.1deg in Dunedin nothing to interesting happening. Although the wind direction is far more southerly than what we normally see i.e coming from over the back of the Peninsula.
Berkshire North of Te Anau west of Hokitika.

Sigh. I think we've hit the end of this cold blast. I didn't even see a single flake. Oh well.

One of those things where you have one night to take it home?Inny Binny wrote:doing some NCEA thing due tomorrow
In the last week I had to do 5 3hr practice exams, glad they're done!
Means now that all the exciting weather will happen when I can't enjoy it as it often does
