NIWA August summary

All main centres were sunnier than normal, with Wellington raking in 180hrs of sunshine!
Rainfall in Auckland was a bit lower (Owairaka at 107mm, long term average there is 135mm for August)
Totals generally ranged from 90mm to 150mm.

A lack of wintry weather( snow) was a stand out for August esp considering there was so much SouthWesterly flow . I thought the South Island temps would have been a bit warmer.

yes, i recorded a 0.7 oC above average (for here) temperature (niwa has 0.9 for auckland)
another month with above average temperatures

Snow in central North Island closed Desert Road on 7th, and snow fell to low levels in east and south of South Island on 13th. (this wasn't mentioned in NIWA summary) I believe there were many cold, frosty nights in inland SI during the month, which could explain why it wasn't warmer than normal there.

Though it noted some inland areas of SI were warmer - Tekapo was +1.4C, the very high sunshine probably helped offset clear cold nights.

Yes it would be the clear nights keeping that mean temp down .
Perhaps September will try make up for the low Winter snow fall , I see the hint of more wintry weather for the south early next week.
