The POLAR VORTEX Dam Burst of July 2007.

Unread post by TokWW »

An interesting topic that relates well to the rough July weather with tornados and westerly storms through that month. The pics here by the Metservice show what happened and why. Very interesting for a newcomer like myself.

http://www.metservice.co.nz/default/ind ... ningcentre

It talks of the Cold air released into the Sth Tasman, the Blocking High that formed there, the Nor-easterlies that hit the East costs and the resultant rough weather we had.

I did not see this linked or the Vortex subject mentioned anywhere so i hope I am not repeating something already posted...

You know about the minor tornado in Botany, apparently it went down my grandparents street and up their driveway (I am completely serious!)
They were not home at the time but neighbours reported seeing it go up the drive and the plants in the garden getting whipped around, with a dreadful howling noise.
Apparently it was very small and passed very quickly but sure did give the residents a fright! There was some damage to some of the houses, but only minor (like lifted roof tiles).
Would have been cool to see it, most disappointed any sign of tornadic activity or rotation was not observed here (4July storm) in Howick, but much heavy rain, thunder/lightning and squally winds :)
