Re: Cold Snap this weekend coming 23 Sept????
Looking like Cheviot to Kiakoura will be waking up to the white stuff, Oxford,Amberley and surrounding areas could see some too, basically anything North and/or higher than 100m West of Christchurch and of course the Banks and port hills could get a dusting,Not hopeful for the south of the city, proberly get a few millimeters above 400m.I'm not expecting to get anything here, but snow is hard to predict in microweather terms and I like a challange so now it's just wait and see if I'm wrong

Umm er?,why would the article be out of date when it is printed in todays Press and forecasted for tomorrow morning.?Just because it was a mild sunny day before the change, a common occurance in the mainland.

500m or near sea-level? Blue Skies and MetService are still differing widely on how cold this southerly will get. Guess we'll find out in the morning who's right. (or will it be somewhere in between)

Re: Cold Snap this weekend coming 23 Sept????
Nothing today looked thundery to me, there was CU about but it was only weak stuff.
We had the heat and managed 13C, but the wind was southerly all day if it had of been easterly it may have been a different story .
First cold front went through at about 5pm delivering a breif shower and drop in temperature, now the second cold front is on its way up with even colder air .
Looks to be a few chances next week for thunder perhaps .
Cheers
Jason.

I wouldn't worry about moisture. Its all about how cold the airmass is. For continental regions mositure for snow is a big issue but not for NZ.whether there will be enough moisture to create any snow.

It's very difficult, but if you do so, then it is aLL on for a thunderstorm to happen and if you are lucky , dare I say it - a mini- tornado thrown it as wellDavid wrote:How exactly is that possible John?NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote:arse crossed

Some very very light snow on the hills around here to about 100m I would guess, but so light that it is barely visible and melting fast. Nothing here on the flat, apart from 2mm in the rain gauge.
Edit: down to 2deg overnight, but back up to 5 now.

Nothing on Port Hills. Only got down to about 5C in Chch (Jeff's Hillmorton station) last night, with 1-2mm.Some very very light snow on the hills around here to about 100m I would guess, but so light that it is barely visible and melting fast. Some further small hail showers here during the day, and noticeably colder and darker than in Chch (7-8deg here, 10-11 in Chch).

Re: Cold Snap this weekend coming 23 Sept????
Certainly looked somewhat darker to the north. Only a few brief spitting rain showers in and around central Chch this morning. Pretty chilly in Kaikoura with only 5C there at noon and 6C at 3pm.Some further small hail showers here during the day, and noticeably colder and darker than in Chch (7-8deg here, 10-11 in Chch).

I was up at Ashley gorge today planting, we had some sleet and graupal showers off and on up antil about 1pm.
Snowline looked to be down to about 100m as Tony mentioned.
Cheers

100 or 1000m? If the former, then wasn't the Ashley Gorge area (which must be over 100m asl) covered in snow?I was up at Ashley gorge today planting, we had some sleet and graupal showers off and on up antil about 1pm.

Re: Cold Snap this weekend coming 23 Sept????
Sorry what i meant was 100m from the Ashley gorge camp ground elevation which i believe is about 370m.
Oxford township is about 350m according to locals,

470m asl - that sounds more believable. Though Tony could easily be talking about 100m asl, which would mean the low foothills of Mt Grey near Amberley.

Re: Cold Snap this weekend coming 23 Sept????
I couldnt see Mt Grey due to cloud cover this morning, I was actually referring to the hills directly north of the Waipara River, which looked to have that gray colour often associated with a very light smattering of snow, although it quickly melted and they went green again by mid morning. Later this afternoon the cloud cleared for long enough to see Mt Grey and I would say snow there was about 300m, but it had warmed up a bit by then.
It seems as if the cold air hit North Canterbury and southern Marlborough, and missed Mid Canterbury altogether. The opposite has been true for most cold outbreaks this season - we had more hail showers here today than just about any other southerly this winter. Yet, being in Chch around the middle of the day, it stayed dry there.

Re: Cold Snap this weekend coming 23 Sept????
Last little flick of showers passed over Chch overnight - must've been the western edge of the front shown on the 6am weather map. (last of the southerly disrbances?)

Re: Cold Snap this weekend coming 23 Sept????
Sorry I meant last disturbance in this southerly flow. Yes cold southerly outbreaks can continue into November, and sometimes December as well. (like last year)Don't southerly outbreaks usually last until about November for the South island?
