Yeah big thunderstorm with reasonable size hail! add to the excitment! once we get out of this dismal east coast fog and low cloud i HATE it!Jasestrm wrote:Yes looks like an event for the north island and one to watch , while we suffer with pitaful showers bring on summer .
I want a good thunderstorm to go rumbling overhead, last one we had like that was back in 2004 bring on the southerly busters, roll clouds.

Nothing much happening here obviously?
The North Island getting the cream of the stormy weather YET AGAIN ...
...but then I hope I'm wrong
...mind you I don't want the hail to hit here until well after the blossoms have gone and I have gone out and protected my fruit

What a coincidence... in 2002 in winter there was a brief hail fall here with stones up to about 17mm diametertornadoman18 wrote:id like a nice storm like back in 2002

Re: Cold Snap this weekend coming 23 Sept????
I am thinking there may be too much cloud cover before the change around midday on Sunday for any thunder development, however I would love to be wrong .
Perhaps a hailstorm more in the summer months when farmers can be more prepared, or the storms could just become isolated to areas around crops.
Maybe the return of Jim could fix all of our weather worries .
Cheers
Jason.

Thunderstorms are NIL this WE for Canterbury, sorry to disapoint you folks.
Too SE and atmosphere conditions don't look appropriate for thunderstorm development, sadly

Notice how it is usually the ones in Canterbury or Christchurch who always evaluate the thunder risk? You all must be getting worked up and excited about the coming thunderstorm season

It's because we seem to get bugger all thunderstorms, Auckland ALWAYS have the lion's share and that's not fair to us down here in Canterbury who always seem to miss out.David wrote:NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote:Thunderstorms are NIL this WE for Canterbury, sorry to disapoint you folks.

When we do get a thunderstorm, they can be quite massive and spectacular. Thats why I created the NZ Thunderstorm Society back in 1983 when no one else in NZ ever dreamed of the idea of having a club/society of people interested in serious and spectacular weather, especially storms, mainly thunderstorms.
To my knowledge there was no-one in the Auckland area who had a thunderstorm club, although there were probably a few young people at the time who were probably interested in weather/thunderstorms,whatever?

Re: Cold Snap this weekend coming 23 Sept????
Actually a lot of Auckland's thunder days can only be one solitary clap of thunder or a weak storm. I would say a strong/spectacular thunderstorm here only occurs every 2 to 3 years as well.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote:When we do get a thunderstorm, they can be quite massive and spectacular
Anyway... I am liking the looks of the systems expected over the North Island form Monday to Thursday. Even if we don't get any storms (which is looking unlikely) there should still be bursts of heavy showers in the duration. I don't think it will get too cold up here in the NI, so maybe a new thread should be started for the activity coming up.

Auckland, well the upper North Island can become quite thunderstormic, especially over the past few years.

From metservice's severe weather outlook page:
Finally, there are some indications that particularly cold air may spread onto the South Island on Tuesday, which could bring snow showers to very low levels. Snowfall amounts are unlikely to reach warning levels, however the combination of strong southerlies and bitterly cold temperatures could put extreme stress on newly born lambs.

Uh...guys, I think you should look at this:

That's an astoundingly low THK reading.
