Re: Unstable over NI 22nd-27th
Almost continuous thunder rolling around the clouds and sheet lightening - it is about 4 to 8 secs time delay so still fairly close. Still rumbling now for 25 minutes. We had a heavy hail shower The wind has changed direction 180 deg twice in 20 mins, very erratic!! Mast is 30m elevation... at the top of a large yard lamp pole.
Still going, heavy rain continues... quite dark now - even webcam above at 10kms north of here is very dark. But the power is still on!!

Yes Ricky I will be! I thought it looked as if it were getting closer
It looks like a long line. The photo I took looks about where the lightning is, but a different part of the line looks to be approaching from the SSW

stopped raining here now, gave 5mm. It was moving very fast considering metservice expected slow storm motions.

Yea i saw it online along with all the other pics people sent in. Looked like they got a really good hail storm over there.
What causes the radar to do that? it always seems to be on days when you want to use it.

Thunderstorm activity this afternoon was just south of Auckland , anyone who chased down there would have been rewarded

Re: Unstable over NI 22nd-27th
at your "Horrid SW" comment, good point Foggo, I'm guilty of this at times , however weather can have an serious impact on my mood at times.Foggy wrote:
If you also read this part I mention us as having the remnants. It was a good storm for the localities of where it hit hardest I actually should of said it was not a good storm here. Anyway, it was nice to hear some thunder again.
But then again this forum isn't at all for complaints about the weather you get.. there's far too many nil-content posts on the board i.e. "when on earth is it going to snow in Chch" or "the horrid SW has risen to gale force" etc etc etc which spams the board. And it needs to stop. Mother nature doesn't care where you are!

Re: Unstable over NI 22nd-27th
It turns out that as the low crossed to the north of Auckland, a pivoting point for the band of CBs that came in from the Bay of Plenty (and that yesterday was expected to be up somewhere in the vicinity of Auckland City) was located early this afternoon actually further to the southeast in eastern Waikato. So once the low went by to the north of Auckland, the flow picked up from the south-southwest and that's why the cells moved quite fast over you David. Eventually, later this afternoon, everything moved to the northeast quite quickly as the action died.David wrote:stopped raining here now, gave 5mm. (The Auckland radar has had some problems lately but I believe it has been repaired now)
Cheers,
Paul

Re: Unstable over NI 22nd-27th
Metservice did fairly well with their thunderstorm forecasts the last two days, with lightning and downpours/hail popping up in the forecast areas. Was hoping for some over Auckland today but they stuck down in the Waikato. Nonetheless well done to metservice
Thanks for that info Paul, I was a bit puzzled before.

Funny that,no matter how unstable the weather is,the moon always shines all night when full or near full

Great clip Dave - love the lightning bolt - certainly miss Auckland at times like this - One thing I liked about Auckland is that it can sure turn on a great storm at any time of the year.David wrote:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GgtqARu85D8

Re: Unstable over NI 22nd-27th
This means not knowing a specific time when most hit though - but yes a good storm can happen at pretty much any time of the year, Nov2004, Dec2004, Mar2005, Jul 2005, Oct2006, Feb2007, and yesterdat (sep2007)janewaystv wrote:One thing I liked about Auckland is that it can sure turn on a great storm at any time of the year.
All different months!
