Thanks spwill! Yes it quite excited me that by random chance one of my trial clips caught a cloud to ground strike centred in the image :D
I tried to take a still image but firstly I found it too hard because the lightning was too quick and secondly the storm didn't produce a great deal of forked lightning bolts anyway.

If you turn the volume up near the end there is a brief deep rumble, but apart from that there is only background traffic and a stupid dog barking its head off.

How strange...just talked to relatives down in Botany south area and they got the Monday storm quite bad, with torrential rain and thunder and lightning very loud overhead, this being much more intense than what happened where I live.
But then the torrential downpour I got yesterday was not received at all at their place.

While on an HT fault in Albany, I took this photo from orange topped, dark thundery skies over Auckland.
The moon in the blue sky above it made it great watching with the naked eye.
Some of these great displays only last a couple of mintes.

Location of photo taken was : William Pickering Drive cnr Bush Rd, Albany, looking South towards Auckland.

Jim mentioned last night that there was a waterspout spotted off the coast around the Tauranga area. :)

ah,ok, further west than whakatane
there was a CB line that moved along the coast line, with the SE wind change...big drops of rain with it in whakatane as it passed by, and great looking dark base on it...that must have been it

It was not supposed to be unstable today/yesterday but where did the power come from to produce a heavy shower on a night that was
forecast to be fine? :-k
At 1.30am here in Howick I was woken by torrential rain - but most of the shower which spanned 15-20mins was just heavy.
The rain gauge collected 5.5mm.
And the eastern beach station also recorded 7mm.
One thing I am happy about is that we did not go ahead with painting yesterday as we had planned to on a fine day.

Simply a rather prolonged and unpleasant southerly here - light showers but very cold, adn it will spoil the sunshine tally significantly.
