Yeah, just passed through Burwood...basically covered everything in little white pellets...
Melting now, though...was in our car on the way home...roads were a bit slippery.

Nice hail shaft visible from a cloud that just passed over - but only 10seconds of about 1-2mm hail fell here though.

Re: Thunderstorms 1st-3rd October
Just had another brief squally hail shower here in Grey Lynn.. The hail must've been highly electrically charged as the noise levels on the lightning detector went nuts!

The key to forecasting thunderstorms in the east of the South Island is the onshore sea breeze. Its quite critical for diurnal convective development. If storms do manage to develop without it, they will be weak and junky. The onshore breezes don't usually fire up untill November.

Yes, thats fair comment and I would agree with that. The onshore flow provides the elevated dewpoints (moisture).NZstorm wrote:The key to forecasting thunderstorms in the east of the South Island is the onshore sea breeze. Yesterday, I was looking for the dewpoints to rise to around 6C in a northeasterly. They did at Timaru but the position of the developing low kept the winds quite northerly in central and Nrn Cny and the air dry. Also, I don't think it cooled aloft quickly enough.

Had some strong squalls come through east Auckland this morning, last one about twenty minutes ago gusting up to 85kmh for a short time. Only brief showers totaling 0.3mm from 9am though.

Steady sleety rain for the last hour here, still falling. Very cold. Occasionally looks like the odd snow flake going past the window too

Down to 3C within the last hour - must be the coldest air over us now, as it's now colder than it was last night. Haven't seen the Port Hills yet, but surely a dusting on BP.

Just been outside for a look - no snow on Port Hills, even though it's been down to 3C with sleet in central Chch.

Re: Thunderstorms 1st-3rd October
We just had a rumble of thunder, then it started raining with gusts to 85kmh and then it turned into a hailshower! Lasted about 1 minute of hail up to about 3mm diameter.

Extrememly strong wind blowing through again with sleet after short sunny spell. The closest I've seen to snow this year happens in October!

Re: Thunderstorms 1st-3rd October
I would agree to that as well. There was nothing like that here yesterday, sadly it just keep on coming from the NW and was cold at that.NZstorm wrote:The key to forecasting thunderstorms in the east of the South Island is the onshore sea breeze. Large Cb to the east of here over BP at the moment.
Yes weve had the odd hail shower go through here at West Melton but of the wintry hail type.

Re: Thunderstorms 1st-3rd October
Has been the odd Thundery Cb across the greater Auckland area this morn and I think most places have seen small hail.
From late November it takes a very good NW to keep the afternoon on shore flow out, December is the favoured month for storms down there. The key to forecasting thunderstorms in the east of the South Island is the onshore sea breeze.

Re: Thunderstorms 1st-3rd October
Sweet as heavy hailstorm just came through! With a flash of lightning and thunder too!
I measured one stone at 1cm maximum - lasted for 2 - 3minutes and was extremely deafening when I took the following pics
That is the fourth time I've heard thunder today

Re: Thunderstorms 1st-3rd October
Nice pics!
We've had basically everything here - rain, sleet, hail, and even snow falling for a few minutes at a time, though quite light.
Looks to be clearing up nicely now.
