Thunderstorms 1st-3rd October
Looking like it is unsatble over much of the country today and tomorrow. Metservice has most of the country as getting some form of a thunderstorm.
Hopefully there is a craker of a thunderstorm in auckland.

Re: Unstable conditions over next few days
The fronts set to cross the N island are looking to be very active.
Yes that would be nice wouldn't it? Last year October was ushered in by heavy thunderstorms during the first days in Auckland, with some central locations apparently receiving 110mm. I had 46mm. Looks to be another thundery start to mark the month (hopefully).j--me--h wrote:Hopefully there is a cracker of a thunderstorm in auckland.

A nice chance of thunder in Chch as well...and maybe a bit of moderate hail as well.

Re: Unstable conditions over next few days
That's tomorrow for Christchurch and Canterbury - maybe something will actually happen down there this time?
Would be great to get another night time thunderstorm here - most thunder and lightning seems to happen during the daytime since I've been observing

It's worse when you actually live up here and are waiting...the only clues you get is if the rain has reached the west coast yet or when the skies start dimming.Inny Binny wrote:Auckland radar's gone down AGAIN so I can't see anything that is happening up there.
Looking at this site on the Wellington coastline:
http://joker.41south.net.nz/weather/weather.htm
shows average wind speeds of 70kmh and gusts to 112kmh
Rural forecasts for northern areas also say winds rise to gale this afternoon with possible gusts to 110kmh. Not all that strong here at the moment - I'd say gusts to 40kmh.
Also I'll add that the event of heavy rainfall on the west coast has already dumped 156mm on the Arthur's pass station.

Updated Thunderstorm forecast for Auckland:
Severe Convection/ Thunderstorm Outlook
Valid to: 12:00 am 2 Oct 2007 NZDT
Issued at: 2:06 pm 1 Oct 2007 NZDT
A frontal band is moving over the South Island, and ahead of it, another frontal band in the Tasman Sea should move onto the North Island this afternoon. Both these systems should lie east of New Zealand tonight. These fronts bring a moderate risk of thunderstorms to western parts of the country, also Bay of Plenty.
Another frontal band with embedded thunderstorms is moving onto northern New Zealand from the Tasman Sea. There is a high risk of thunderstorms with this feature this afternoon and evening about Northland, Auckland and Waikato and Coromandel Peninsula, and there could be localised heavy falls of 10 to 25mm per hour.
There is a low risk of thunderstorms about the southwest of the North Island and the Marlborough Sounds.
Some localised heavy rainfalls up to 25mm per hour are expected along the South Island West Coast, easing behind the front. In the North Island, localised wind gusts up to 110 km/h are expected with thunderstorms as the fronts pass over.
No thunderstorms are expected in the east.
Wow, just got 43 hits on the lightning tracker in a minute.

Re: Unstable conditions over next few days
Bulk of the storm activity is north of the city.
Occasional thunder here and the odd overhead lightning flash, mod rain.

What is the general ruling on lightning with time and distance? eg how many seconds between the stike and noise to be 1 killometer away

Re: Unstable conditions over next few days
I have heard that if you can hear the thunder then the strike is less than 10 km away, and i also think that the old one second, two second, three second thing is a load of rubbish as air density will change etc etc.j--me--h wrote:What is the general ruling on lightning with time and distance? eg how many seconds between the stike and noise to be 1 killometer away
Therefore i stick with the 10km rule

Re: Unstable conditions over next few days
We have some very heavy rain on and off over the last hour here in Albany, at our Bush road depot.
Occasionally some good lighting and some thunder.
