Thunderstorms in West 6th to 8th October
The front moving up the country over the next couple of days should be thundery in the west given a good moisture inflow coming down from the North Tasman. Thunderstorms should reach Taranaki by tomorrow night and further north Monday with this front.

What are the chances like of being able to see lightning on the mountains on the eastern side like you can sometimes see?

Yes, front will be back over Taranaki/Waitomo Monday. Precip in Auckland by Tuesday. The trough coming in from the Tasman Wednesday does complicate the situation. Somehwere is going to get a real soaking.Monday is expected to be dry tho?

Why at all bother? When it is that far away you have to actually be looking right at it to even notice it - maybe because it brings back fond memories of the thunderstorms Canty used to get?NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote: About once or twice a year.
(Did you not say storms have been decreasing in Canty John?)

Some models suggest an interesting scenario for next Friday, a low to move down from the northwest over NI with heavy rain. Hopefully.

Re: Thunderstorms in West 6th to 8th October
A bit thundery here at Tawa between 1730 and 1800 complete with gusty winds - the associated squalls dumped 4 mm of rain.
Some good flashes of lightning. Activity seems to have eased now.
Oddly enough its been gloomy most of the day (the cloud must be very thick) and its only late in the day that things are lightening up (no pun intended) with the passage of the thunderstorms.

Re: Thunderstorms in West 6th to 8th October
Active thunder and lightning right overhead for the city - first decent go I've heard here in daylight hours for a while. Bursts of heavy rain. Overcast all day so no picturesque cloud buildups to be viewed! Great contrast to yesterday's very pleasant sunny conditions.
The elements must be doing a show to mark the burial of All Black rugby (died after 1997 in my humble opinion).
Rain getting heavier!

Thunderstorms from Wellington to Darwin this evening.

Dewpoints still on the rise here, now up to 14 -15C. Made the 21C here this afternoon feel quite warm.

Nice to hear of thunderstorms in the Wellington region. You don't hear much about weather on this forum from Wellington.
It's a wonder that Trevor McGavin guy dosen't contribute?

I think Treevor McGavin is too busy. He stopped writing up notable weather events in the Met. Society's newletters - I think Ben does them now.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote:Nice to hear of thunderstorms in the Wellington region. You don't hear much about weather on this forum from Wellington.

I usually can't be bothered commenting on poor weather, most of it doesn't interest me.

It's raining here now, unexpected. Wind now died out and calm.
Latest radar show rain coming down from the north.
Barometer rising.
