How do you know that there won't be any thunder when MS has forecast a high risk for this afternoon?
You know David, sometime it's not always the best to treat the MetService as 'gospel'. ;)

Only penetrating storms around today were over Westport, so I think Steven was right on the mark today. :)

Max gust today here was 71 km/h. :D

It looks as if the westerly trend will continue...

I should have learnt that long ago after many let-downs over the last few years

Wow I would have expected 80kmh+ for Auckland then - but peak gusts here struggled to reach 60kmh.

Yes there was a bit of a warming trend in the upper air coming in during the day, and Westport got the last of the very cold air.
But just lacked something as it just capped and got rugged at a certain height.
Too dry Jason. If dps were 6 or 7C higher today down your way you would have had the pleasure of a thunderstorm. :)
These situations are fruitful in December because your typical coastal sea breeze is worth a dp of atleast 10C then.

Some strikes along coastal Buller,Taranaki and Waitomo so Met Service did okay today.
Thunderstorms in these cold flows tend be just thundery showers .

Dark towards the south here as the Southerly is starting to roll in, but looking weak.
Yes good to see jason but action is what counts at this time of year now not signs. 8)

Your squall just passed through here Brian - 1.5mm rain and 70kmh gusts with spray flying about :D
Not anywhere near the 110kmh in squalls that could have been possible today - that would have been nice to see.

Hmmm be interesting to see how the weather folds up tomorrow afternoon.
Anything looking like thunder activity along the wind change? i see MS is going for a moderate risk! will probably depend on how much heat we get to when the cold air arrives.

Clear skies in central Chch. Can't see towards the Alps from my place - blocked by the concrete and deciduous jungle of the central city.

I'm glad I live out in the suburbs of Auckland with larger land blocks and no big buildings. The dense buildings makes it feel crammed and destructs the view of the sky. Totally ruins weather observing I say.

The wind here not that strong, only light

We are getting those very distant, wind-blown, rumbles of thunder here too, plenty of flashes in the western sky, strong winds and spitting rain.
