Re: Active Front 17th Oct
Hmm well the ground has been wet and shiny here for the last 2 1/2 hrs, and I only live in Prebbleton.
Still raining, temp still seems to be dropping.

A picture from today's cold front moving over about 3:30pm taken looking to the WSW of here.
Raining nicely here now, 4.5mm since it came onto rain about 7:30pm.

Still hasn't reached central Chch (only tiny traces rain so far), even though all around according to recent radar. Snowing in Mackenzie country according to Trademe forum poster.

Re: Active Front 17th Oct
This event was the biggest fizzer of the year for ChCh! Promised much and delivered quite literally nothing. Looks like other parts of Cannterbury got a wee bit of rain thou, but nothing to write home about

Re: Active Front 17th Oct
That rain band yesterday evening took so long to arrive - the first of it at 9.30pm.
But it gave nearly 10mm in the end over several hours.
Looks like some heavy showers on the way for Auckland by looking at this morning's rain radar, and a nice satellite pic with messy cloud and cumulonimbus out SW in the Tasman.

There is snow on the hills here in Dunedin this morning, not much but definitely some.

Note that NZ gets a much higher percentage of positive CG's than the US (from memory, about 30% here). I think this is mostly due to the higher vertical wind shear environments that storms generally develop within here compared to places like Florida.
thanks, thats excellent

Re: Active Front 17th Oct
Hardly any rain in central Chch overnight (unlike most other parts of Canterbury), but showery this morning. Sunny now, with areas of cloud.

Re: Active Front 17th Oct
Had a very heavy shower here this morning, 4mm rain today. Looks okay on the rain radar but the forecast is looking decent. Some puffy clouds around but nothing big and also no lightning on the lightning tracker I can see. Really most of the activity was originally expected this evening anyway.

Re: Active Front 17th Oct
Had a bit of sleety haily showery rubbish in the morning - nothing to get excited about.
Ye, another fizzer on a long list of them.
Ah well, doesn't matter.

Re: Active Front 17th Oct
Bit of a thunderstorm in the Nth Waikato at the moment, nice cool upper air here now but pretty low dew points so not much action... some really good looking showers on the rain radar out to the SW though
Looks like there could be some decent snow over the eastern NI ranges tonight

Re: Active Front 17th Oct
Heard there was an intense hailstorm in Turangi this afternoon. Cold snap seem to be moving up over NI now. Still chilly in Chch but sunny with only scattered cloud now. (funnily still shower activity in inland Canterbury on 4pm radar)

Isolated storms south of the Bombay Hills
Poor lift today, needed better daytime heating for storms around here.
Looks like good conditions for the Coastal Classic Yacht Race tomorrow. Departs Auckland 10am for Russel, always worth a look.

Re: Active Front 17th Oct
Not much in the way of rain overnight, but some icy showers this morning of rain and hail.
Waimak river was going nuts yesterday, bank to bank over the boat ramp and even jumping rapaids.
This would have been from the storms in the foothills on Tuesday night.
As we move past Labour weekend that is always a good time to say that storm season is getting close .
Cheers
Jason.

Re: Active Front 17th Oct
Certainly unstable looking skies here today. Some heavy showers where I was working in Remuera. Quite an unseasonably cool day.
I would be amazed if we achieved the forecast minimum of 2C in Auckland tomorrow or when ever it was forecast for. I should check back to see if we had a 2C low this last winter. Not sure that we did.
On the Auckland edition of NewstalkZB this morning there was a long range forecast given for extreme weather for the next 2 months. I'm not suggesting I believe it but thought I would mention it here.

Well maybe not in other parts of the city but last Winter here the cold nights were:NZstorm wrote:I would be amazed if we achieved the forecast minimum of 2C in Auckland tomorrow or when ever it was forecast for. I should check back to see if we had a 2C low this last winter. Not sure that we did.
-1.0, 0.6, 0.6, 1.1, 1.8, 1.9, 2.1, 2.2.
So 8 nights 2C or lower. Could be 2C here if it goes down to 4C in the city.
I'd say not in the city but it would be possible here - Oct 2006 had a low of 2.8C and the lowest here this month is 3.6Cspwill wrote:Wont get a min of 2C in Auckland, ridiculous.
The main limiting factor will be cloud cover, it is very rare in Auckland to maintain a clean perfectly clear sky for 12hours.
