Stable weather to end October
Our weather is looking to stabilise later this week with a slow moving anticyclone settling over NZ if the ECMRF is to be believed. So finally an end to this current spell of windy weather in sight.
There will be a few thunderstorms/hail from Westland to Fiordland to coastal South Otago on Wednesday.

Metvuw charts show a big anticyclone too, slow moving. Looks set to intensify as it sits over NZ from about Friday, with central pressure >1036. Hopefully November will offer some more action for us. Niwa forecasted in the outlook that rain would be continuing normal to above normal and temperatures likely to be above normal.

Re: Stable weather to end October
Stable weather oh no , you guys in the north island can have the high.
We need more rain here, soils are getting rather dry and to add on top of that the frost the other morning which has burnt any new leaves on most plants.
I surpose I wouldnt mind abit of settled weather to start November, only because storm season will be off to a bang after that .
Got to get through these gales tomorrow, looks like there could be some quite severe gales from about Timaru southwards tomorrow afternoon.
Cheers
Jason.

So easy to forecast W / SW weather ahead at this time of the year but believe it when you see it for N or E weather

Sunny again today. We may pass Auckland yet this month after a very poor start, now 118.5 hrs to 21st and should be at least 10 for today.

Re: Stable weather to end October
October usually is a month of contrasts. In 2005 October had 220mm of rain, 219mm of that ending on the 22nd. It appears to be a similar set up with the last 10 days looking dry overall. One thing to note about October this year in Auckland is the wind. This is the 16th day of the month with gusts 40km/h or higher.

Just saw a gust at Tairoa Heads of 95knots (171kph)
I might head down with the handheld anemometer and a lifejacket for when I get blown out to sea

Where did you get this info?Fujita Phil wrote:Just saw a gust at Tairoa Heads of 95knots (171kph)
http://www.portotago.co.nz/12/6.html This is the only link I know of for Taiaroa Heads, however the scale won't adjust for winds over 70 knots.

Re: Stable weather to end October
Interesting to see the story on the news about the wild winds in Invercargill today, all the broken fallen trees, iron sheets and roofing flying around. They reported winds gusting over 130km/h in parts. The Bluff data from southport recorded a peak wind gust of 74 knots (137km/h)
I see one of the personal online stations in Invercargill reported an average speed of 103km/h early this morning before ceasing to report data. Maybe it blew off the roof?

Re: Stable weather to end October
Hi there
I used to live in Invercargill but have now moved to Thornbury just short of Riverton on the south coast where I have set up a Climate Station reporting to NIWA monthly . Today the westerly arrived at about 0600 with winds gusting to 40 knots initially but rapidly peaked at 54 knots by 0730 averaging 35- 40 knots for about 30 minutes . Winds started tapering off by 0900 averaging 25 knots at the 0900 obs.

Could see that unfortunate bank of cloud all day here to the north. Has been a beautiful day here and may there be plenty more!!Michael wrote:Drizzle now turned to General Rain now,was supposed to be showers
It looks as if a bit of warmth will creep in on Saturday before a nudging cooler airflow comes in from the east on Sunday.

Re: Stable weather to end October
Yes been overcast and a bit drizzly all day in Auckland but kind off nice too becuase we didn't have that awful wind that we suffered all labour weekend. I see Southland and south Otago got some thunder today. The last deep instability over NZ for a few days.

Re: Stable weather to end October
That southerly on Friday/early Saturday will bring some light snow down to about 600m on coastward high ground along east of South Island. Quite a stable southerly though so not much in the way of showers with it.

Clouded over from all directions from about 1pm onwards.tich wrote:Has clouded over in Chch, but nothing on radar yet.
Drizzle turning to rain here this evening.
Very stabilized southerly change compared to Wednesday but then conditions were different.
I can see it getting over 11ºC tomorrow if the cloud breaks?
Should be some frosts in EXPOSED areas, Sunday morning??
This oncoming anticyclone could produce some warm temperatures next week as it hangs off to the NE of the NI next week?

Should be fairly widespread frost and the Malborough wine makers better have the choppers ready!Should be some frosts in EXPOSED areas, Sunday morning??
Sunday should be a cold day in Auckland with temps struggling to top 13C I think.
