Poor family...
Girl dies after being blown into path of bus
A Christchurch schoolgirl has died after being blown into the path of a bus in the high winds that struck Canterbury yesterday.
Police said Jennifer Barnes, 12, was standing on a traffic island in suburban Northcote about 3.10pm yesterday when she fell into the path of a bus travelling north.
She died in hospital early this morning from her injuries.
Detective Sergeant Greg Cottam, of Papanui police, said witnesses told of Jennifer pressing the pedestrian crossing signal button while she was holding on to her bicycle. A strong wind gust caught her and her bike, blowing her into the path of oncoming traffic.

Re: Storms & gales Eastern SI, Oct 24th
Most likely wouldn't be in the herald anyways David unless it was a massive storm witch caused alot of problems, although on the late one news last night it was on!
What a great start to storm season down this way.

Yes, I was going to say, if there was a warning on the MetService page, no chance.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote:I see there no chance of thunderstorms for Canterbury tomorrow on the MetService Thunderstorm Forecast.

Shame about the schoolgirl, my heart goes out to her family, it's always horrid when someone especially so young dies as a result of weather

I'm surprised that 03 Stormchaser and Aaron, or even Steven Graham have not contributed to this discussion?

Change looks to be abit too weak for thunderstorms I think John, but let them be if thats the case.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote:I see there no chance of thunderstorms for Canterbury tomorrow on the MetService Thunderstorm Forecast.

Re: Storms & gales Eastern SI, Oct 24th
No MetService warning for thuderstorms anywhere in NZ tomorrow, but then again yesterday's ones weren't predicted. Certainly a cold change coming (snow flurries to 500m in south Friday night), but probably not much moisture with it. Chtaham Islands look to be more in the firing line for wintry showers and stong southwesterlies.Change looks to be abit too weak for thunderstorms I think John, but let them be if thats the case

I'm still here John, look at the forum every day. Sometimes I feel like I'm right in the mix but to you guy's looks like I'm not visiting at all if I'm not visually contributing (i.e. a post! LOL).
Yes, a storm after a warm northwesterly day. It has happened, I'll be damned! However, it is interesting to note that before the southwest / southerly change came through the wind tended WNW and the dewpoint went up to 6 C. So despite it being from the westerly quater, that shift to the WNW v's being NW before brought an increase in moisture for whatever reason. And I believe this would've helped storm developement, if the dewpoint had've stuck around 2 C like at 3pm that afternoon storms may not have happened.
Still the storms were relatively coastal, just generalising here. Not pushing to far inland. And I get the feeling maybe this storm is being given alot of hype, we can get better. The two exceptions are the 15mm hail out at Templeton and the strong winds, that's not too bad at all.....But lightning is lightning and any is really cool! Maybe it's just been a while since some of us cantabs have seen one. LOL.
Looking forward to more storms in the near future!!!
Cheers
Aaron
