Cold weather to start off November
Looks like the first week of November will have cold weather to start off the month
Well for the first week, anyway with an intensefying anticyclone moving only slowly from the Aussie Bight.

A slow moving high south of the Aussie Bight is always bad news for NZ's weather. Looks like a polar surge will reach the South Island Monday.

Re: Cold weather to start off November
Just because there might be a cold outbreak in the first week doesn't mean it's going to be colder than normal over the whole November or the summer months.

Re: Cold weather to start off November
Half a week of colder than what we have just been having weather isnt going to have a great effect on the overall pattern of a few months though. It still will probably be warmer than normal summer.

The Pohutukawa trees sure seem to think so, they've been flowering for a couple of weeks around here now

I have noticed them too Ricky but I suspect they are the Kermedec species which has a longer and sporadic flowering season. The Pohutukawa trees sure seem to think so, they've been flowering for a couple of weeks around here now

Re: Cold weather to start off November
We've had a pohutukawa near us which has remained in-flower all through winter. No idea what species it is, but the 2007 winter certainly felt warmer than usual, with nothing even approaching a frost (we usually get a few mild ones). Of course, I have no data to back this up...

Re: Cold weather to start off November
Not exactly a cold start to November, but cooler than yesterday in Chch today. Some ingredients for action appearing this pm (cloud buildups, NE breeze, and sunshine warming the ground), but probably not unstable enough here. Showers in South Canterbury on 6pm radar, but still dry in Chch though clouded over.

Re: Cold weather to start off November
It will be the Kermedec species. The NZ Xmas tree is quite strict in its flowering time which starts mid to late November and ends in January. We've had a pohutukawa near us which has remained in-flower all through winter. No idea what species it is,

Re: Cold weather to start off November
Our dry ground in Auckland gets promised rain after a dry period, it never arrives, and then the proper rain is put forward a couple of days

Re: Cold weather to start off November
Driving north from Ch'ch at 8.30, signs of instability in various parts. Ran into sun/clouds after a heavyish shower just north of Belfast. Lovely morning here at Hanmer but streaks of cirrus, plus the forecast, don't bode well for my Saturday and early Sunday at Nelson. I have an exciting picture of stratiform cloud near West Melton taken y'day afternon - the sort of thing that sends Cant'y weatherwatchers into a frenzy of excitement.

Re: Cold weather to start off November
Warm here, up to 20C but murky, a mild night will follow.
Looks like the Westerly pattern of recent weeks is on the way out with low preasure developing in the North Tasman next week, we will see.

Re: Cold weather to start off November
Some nice weak CU convection about today typical under a situation as this.
Great funnel cloud material provided you have an oppisite wind backing up against say a NE.
Looks rather quiet on the thunder front at the moment, although things dont usually pick up until about mid November anyway.
Cheers
Jason.

I tried John, but the people in a couple of shops/service station said they didn't know your name or where you lived. With more time I could have scouted around for a phone book...NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote:Where abouts? It's a fine mild morning in Nelson, very pretty drive y'day. Some signs of deterioration from the N as that low aims at central NZ soonish.

Re: Cold weather to start off November
Storm season hasnt even got near to starting yet so its fair to say that the more active months are coming up perhaps.melja wrote:You guys just keep pushing canterburys thunder season later and later i think by now you can see that we arnt going to have one of those good seasons anyway.Jasestrm wrote:Looks rather quiet on the thunder front at the moment, although things dont usually pick up until about mid November anyway.

The only reason we get excited about it is because of the rather pitaful winter we had to make up for it .
Cheers
