"For Auckland, Northland and Coromandel Peninsula
Fine spells. Isolated showers along eastern shores, briefly spreading elsewhere tomorrow afternoon."

Great  They're expecting showers in the east. It's a fantastic day, and the cloud is nowhere near as close as they were yesterday. The cloud that developed yesterday was over where I live, but it didn't do anything except 3 drops of rain. If only they could form in the east on a really unstable day!

I see some heavy showers have developed in the Coromandel Peninsula ranges and one also off the coast near the Waitakeres.
Nothing here though just full on sunshine with scattered clouds (none of which are crossing in front of the sun). :)

Turned mostly cloudy here now due to the heating (22.2C earlier) with some stronger cumulus developing all day out west, but it seems inland Hawkes Bay saw the goods today. (MetService did well) :)

Napier Airport reporting a 14C dewpoint at 4pm

Tell you what, when working in the sun this morning with no wind at all makes it it damn HOT; keep that sunscreen handy!

A few wee convective showers can be seen inland at the moment, one of them more to the north is quite structured :) .
This is inbetween breaks in the lower pesky cloud.
They are spreading eastwards though so will keep watch.
Cheers

Yes, Met service picked the convection over inland Hawkes Bay. Looks to have been a decent thunderstorm there in the last hour. Also some weak tstorms over inland Gisborne and inland Canterbury.

One or two lightning strikes along there Foggy.

Best storm action looks to be inland Hawkes Bay, Canterbury and Otago at the mo.

Far to the south it is quite grey and there are some towering Cu that I can see, can't see any anvils on any yet. Quite strange to see it is so fantastic up here yet down in Waikato there are some heavy showers and according to lightning tracker even some lightning firing out of them. I wonder if there would be any hail?, the possibility was mentioned by MS rural forecast for Waikato.

By the looks of the rain radar one shower has sat in one particular spot for a while down near the coast of Waikato, about an hour or two, must have had a bit of dumping of rain maybe 20mm. There were some pink dots on the 4pm radar.

Looks to have a bit of a gust front on its edge borris89, I'm only familiar with basic storm features though, is it a shelf cloud, anyone??

looks like a boundary line developed down the South Island between a weak dry westerly and a moist E sea breeze.
They can be fickle things to predict so you can't blame forecasters if they didn't pick it. Very interesting to see this happen. Thanks for the pics borris89.

Still quite a few active cells especially in south canterbury at the moment.
Some dissipated CU has been looming overhead here, but now there's some weak CU towers above nice to see.
Here's a few pics I took of a cell to the N-NW at 6pm, Tony may have been closer to this one.
Cheers
Jason.

Chch dewpoints were around 10C, so moist air there.

Bob Crowder returned from Golden Bay today and told me that when driving back, he encountered a thunderstorm in behind Hawarden later this afternoon. Heard a few rumbles and saw one or two lightning strikes in the cloud.
However he said the system was rather weak and was surprised by the amount of rumbles he heard.

Cool to see some stuff has happened. Thanks for the report John, I think Bob has a 6th sense for these things. One of the last times he came back from a holiday up that way he encountered a thunderstorm in North Canterbury, now it happens again. lol

Cool pics from up north and good stuff Jase, I would've raced out there if I could but sighhh.... hehe.

I'm still hoping that perhaps there will be a few more storms this year than last.

Cheers

I liked the pictures Jason, it shows a poplar tree bending in the stiff easterly breeze :)
That was probably Bobs thunderstorm.
Latest Metservice lightning detector shows strikes from that storm plus the Geraldine one and a few further down south in inland areas of Otago.

No discussion yet?! :o Mustn't be very vertical in Auckland yet... :P

Quite a bit of towering cumulus about today... very promising signs and it looks as if the punchy T/Cu to the E may turn to Cb within the next hour.
Lots of Pileus around too. :)
