This is GREAT people watching here...people are having to lean into the wind as they walk from the parking lot to the races :D
(Dresses and hats blowing all over!)
Wind has turned to a strong SW and we have now lost visibility of the hills....heavy rain a coming...

A small burst of hail in Riccarton just before, very windy but sun back out. There is definetely more action in the port hills!

Standing by for our turn

I saw three bits of lightning and then it seemed to die. Pretty hopeless.

A good looking cell passed just to the south of Chch, into the Port Hills now.
More development down the line but Chch into the cold air now, 14C I see.

Yep thunderstorm all-right to the south of the city moving around the back of the Port Hills/ BP.
I saw no lightning and heard no thunder about 1:45pm and never took any photos as it wasn't much really to photo.
NW swiftly around to the SW driving up Hamptons Road, Prebbleton.
Heavy rain but no hail
Lotsa sfericals on my car radio :)

Watched storm pass through Lyttelton from the CPIT roof! Some nice strikes, Mum (who lives in Lytt) said it passed over Quail Island.

Also, we had SNOW at CPIT! Only little flakes, but it wasn't small hail and it wasn't sleet.. Is it called graupel?

Got some video, I'll see if i can get some stills out of it later..

Well turned out to be a complete and utter fizzer here, more spectacular for the speed at which the storm imploded on itself rather than any real action.

The folk at the races are safe...for now.

Gale SW tomorrow with possible severe gusts :)

All focus on Christchurch! Looks like torrential rain and maybe hail in that thunderstorm around Banks Peninsula. =D>
Someone better have some photos comin'!

The Banks Peninsula storm is moving away to the east now.

There is more thunderstorm activity developing about the foothills. This I think is in response to more cooling aloft with the cold polar jet and strong trough moving northeast up the west side of the South Island.

I was out at Rolleston today and watched the cell come up the coast towards the Port hills, seen two CG's in the distance and then another two later on as the windchange went through.
Interesting to note how in mid- south canterbury there is low cloud but here i can still see some really unstable looking showers with CU all over the show :D .
Will post some pics later.
Cheers
Jason.

Hmm well while I was at school (Lincoln High) we had bout 10-15 mins of very torrential rain at about 1:30, with lots of thunder to be heard (but didn't dee any lightning as I was inside  ), mud all on the ground from the drains...no hail, but very, very heavy rain. :D

Looks like a storm is brewing out there, ive got CU clouds coming in from the east off the sea here with those shower cells more W and W-SW coming over.
Getting darker a few sporadics this low is doing something, reminds me of the Feb 14th storm 8-[ .
Keep watch.
Cheers

Spoke to someone who experienced the thunderstorm downpour from Little River to about Motukarara - ties in with the red blob on the radar. Dark to southwest of Chch again now.

That CU line stopped not far from us overhead was being backed up by the southerly which means the wind out at sea could have been E-SE.
Some rain on the radar but nothing to write home about, we do need the rain though.

Only a few light spots here - nothing to register in the rain gauge, ground still dry.
