Strong southwest flow, 14 Nov
From metservice:
"In some exposed areas on the east coast from the eastern hills of Wellington to about Tokomaru Bay also parts of Auckland and Coromandel Peninsula, winds are likely to reach gale with gusts to around 130 km/h for a time."
Yay bring it on, I'm on study break now so will be home to see what unfolds. If its just a gale then I'd say gusts up to 100km/h but if there are squally showers as well, isolated incidents of 130km/h could happen. (Hopefully here)

Re: Strong southwest flow, 14 Nov
The wind is already picking up, I see it is gusting 61km/h already at your station Brian. I did expect some showers this evening, but sadly, there has been nothing here. Maybe more showery tomorrow, gales looking imminent but still don't know about severe gusts over Auckland. Will have to just wait...
Strange how the weather warning states possible gusts to 120km/h yet the marine warning has only 50knots. Would have thought it would have been stronger over the sea than over the land.

Re: Strong southwest flow, 14 Nov
Maybe MS were joking? SW only gusting 40kmh here which is weaker than it was 5 hrs ago. And I don;t know whats up with these showers, it rains for 3 seconds then stopped and then poured for another 3 seconds, etc. Only 3mm so far which is not really much use to the ground
Obviously the gale is going to arrive with a vengeance (like the one last Nov)?

Re: Strong southwest flow, 14 Nov
just had a brief hail shower go through
I see the breakfast news was talking about the 130kmh gusts that could cause damage in the Auckland area today....I think met service should get cancellations out earlier of warnings like that...but it is squally in the showers, but nothing out of the ordinary

some wintry looking Cbs around today, especially out in the western skies. Still gales could come in but looking unlikely now. Sunny here atm.

Not much wind here, mostly in the mod to fresh range.
Cool, 11C with a few brief heavy showers.

The deepest instability will just make Auckland by the looks so could be a rumble or two out there this morning. Certainly some heavy showers.

Re: Strong southwest flow, 14 Nov
I went and watched a very dark cloud approach here, and it absolutely poured for 4 minutes with small wintry type hail for about a minute or so, and some slightly squally winds too

Re: Strong southwest flow, 14 Nov
Had a thunderstorm come through from the south at about 10. Looked black as, as it came up. Was the first shower of the day to come from the south and the temp plumeted with it. Had hail mixed with heavey rain being wind driven for over an hour and probably had a solid 15-20mm out of it judging by how much the swimming pool came up. Had some strong wind with it too. So im happy

Re: Strong southwest flow, 14 Nov
Missed that - working at Boys High. Had plenty of squally rain showers though, but looks like easing now. (ie no showers in last 1/2 hour) Wintry & Stormy in parts of NI according to news - snow on Desert Road & Waiouru and Cooks Strait ferries disrupted by big seas.Heavy hail storm just at the moment in CHCH CDB.
