It sure was warm and muggy last night made for a great nights sleep  .
3.2mm from this mornings rain and yes a very muggy warm day followed, it was just like being on the west coast.
Still mild now with a breezy N-NW wind.
Cheers
Jason.

It seems to be quite variable from the northerly quater actually - at the moment Jeff's station recording light NE, and at wunderground most of the stations are recording from NE to NW.

And I just had a hot pie, and completely forgot about the consequences...32 C. Ah well, at least the double glazing helps a little. 8)

It's a record high temp for December at my station but maybe not for Christchurch. My records only go back to 2000.

Yeah, and it's by quite a lot too, the previous highest Dec. temperature was 30.8 wasn't it?

It got up to 32.4, then dropped when the NE picked up, now rising again a little but I doubt it wil get to what it was before. :)

By heck is it muggy and hot  , and check out those bubbling CU towers going up like ballons everywhere nice dark bases now too.
If thunderstorms dont occur then ill be dammed because they sure do have some height .

Yes, 30.8C last December was my previous record. Beaten by a good margin.

All that heat down in Canterbury has triggered a thunderstorm inland from Timaru although just a weak storm.
I notice the dewpoint temp today 17C at Invercargill, so some moisture in the deep south.

Those CU towers did look threatning and impressive for awhile in the way they developed so quickly and it was humid and sticky perhaps abit too hot though.
The weak thunderstorm that popped up in the foothills west of Timaru possibly went up abit better due to some valley shelter.
Tomorrow should see the same I would think except this time the chance of rain actually falling will be better.
Temperature has gone back up to 28C currenlty, it was 23C before when the sun was behind the CU.
Sure is going to be a muggy night ahead, I see Lyttleton was on 23C at 2am this morning according to one weather.
A few pics to ponder with.

Just playing tennis and cripes is it hot and muggy, not enjoyable. Good to see some tallish tops around though. :)

There also seems to be a good amount of rain coming up, much needed:

I think there was a convergence line running through that area this afternoon. Cooler to the south of it.

that moisture in the deep south triggered a thunderstorm over coastal Southland this evening.

That anticyclone to the east of us is incredible! I can't remember ever seeing a high block for so long and then move eastward back towards NZ (thats what is forecast to happen). Looks as if rain from the low will be pushed into the South Island instead, as the high extends onto the North Island, the reverse of La Nina :o
