Re: Subtropical rain North Island, from 5th Dec
Dew points approaching 21C in parts of Auckland now. Cloud has thinned but still hasn't broken. I see metservice have upped the highs for Northland to 24 as well. They've also changed the forecast from rain to showers for today and tomorrow instead of rain. Negligible lightning activity around Northland at the moment, so hopefully the heating and high dew points will re-activate thunderstorm activity as expected by metservice.

Yes, not much heating this afternoon for the North by the looks but should see some thundery Cb's redevelop over Northland .

cloud nealry broken here. get bursts of sunlight and when that happens it is like being in the tropics. Also since the sun has started breaking through there are more and more dark showers around. So hopefully this sun can cause some more land heating

bit further south in Wanganui, constant drizzle/light rain. A much needed 7.0 mm rain in last 12 hours (last period of rain was 19 days ago)

Latest rain radar (4.35pm) shows what looks to be medium intensity showers just heading in from the north now.
Also suggests a localised heavy downpour right in the city centre.
Could be some beefier things to follow too......

cant wait 4 the 6 oclock radar. my god have the heavens just opened.
i see MS have made a severe thunderstorm watch all down the upper NI into waikato which makes sence because there are some heavy rains about.

Why don't they just make it for heavy showers, surely they can see there's really no lightning around. They must be expecting some convection to happen, there's not a great deal of heavy rain around.j--me--h wrote:MS have made a severe thunderstorm watch

The 15C dewpoint at Hamilton means stable air and its on its way north. As Met Service have indicated, the instability will be north of Whangarei by tomorrow.
I hope the front shifts away quickly tomorrow and we can start the weekend with some sunshine.

Re: Subtropical rain North Island, from 5th Dec
Cooler in Auckland this morning, just 13C but a dry Friday ahead by the looks.
Looking like the front will move back onto us Saturday evening with a rise in the dewpoints again. This front will bring thunderstorms back into upper Northland but Auckland will just see some rain by the looks. Looking like the NE wind will really get up on Sunday.

Re: Subtropical rain North Island, from 5th Dec
This system was originally meant to bring rain for several days, but MS have changes it to just showers now
Also was a mistake leaving a window open last night, so much for the forecast 17C, went down to 13C.

I agree. Looks like a few light showers at the worst, can't see much accumulation in the rain gauge but we'll see if the sun comes out and heats things up a bit.NZstorm wrote:dry Friday ahead by the looks.

Re: Subtropical rain North Island, from 5th Dec
Dewpoints are on the way back up and thunder looks likely for Northland later today. I suppose we can call it a NE surge. It will bring heavy showers into Auckland city tonight. Currently in Auckland a fine morn with 14C.
