Unsettled week ahead

Unread post by NZstorm »

Just though I would start a new thread to cover any weather events this week.

Interesting to see thunderstorms popping up over Southland and SE Otago this afternoon. There is some good moisture down there today and the Met Service where on the button with their convective forecast today. I wonder whether the cooler upper air coming in on Tuesday will be the start of another round of afternoon storms for the South Island.

As for the North Island, looking like some decent rain mid week. A rise in the dewpoints early week in the north should bring a thunderstorm risk to Northland. Not sure about further south.

Sure was some heat in the sun today phew 8) 33C sounds about right to me.
Could be another warm one tomorrow too up around the late 20's.
Low chance of thunder with this next change due to that dry NW beforehand, could see some ok amounts of rainfall much needed after days like today.
Cheers
Jason.

Some weak convergence showers through our West this afternoon, generally a fine muggy day.

Some of those showers over Auckland first thing this morning too. Quite heavy considering the instability was shallow today.

There is certainly some convective potential in this trough coming onto the North Island in the next day or two, a case of seeing what happens I guess. A downpour would be welcome.

My guesscaste for today, a southerly change moving up the Otago coast thursday may trigger a thunderstorm there.

Most models seem to be in agreement with a burst of heavy rain on Wednesday. Hope it actually happens though. We really are beginning to need it because that last system gave us a pathetic amount of rain to what was forcast #-o . Getting verry dry around the place

Upper air looking more unstable today now that the low level inversion has cleared. Strong daytime heating this afternoon would trigger a thunderstorm or two over inland areas. Mind you, there is considerable cloud about today, it would be nice to see some it clear. Overcast altocumulus and patchy stratus here.

That would be welcome rain down south Tich though chilly.

Still dull and drizzly in central Chch. Looking at radar it seems much of Canterbury has cleared (of precipitation), but a patch of drizzle stubbornly clings to the Pegasus Bay coast, along with showers over the North Canterbury foothills.

19C dewpoints here today and showers about :) And yes, tomorrow is looking great for that heavy rain (at last!!) :D

Perhaps we may see a couple of embedded thunderstorms develop tomorrow afternoon with the moderately unstable conditions and high moisture ratios.

Looks like a line of heavy showers is due over isthmus-Auckland & northwards very soon. :)

This storm seems to have blown itself out fairly quickly. Dark clouds went over with thunder and no rain, the sky went bright and then light rain. Man that radar sure told a false story. Disappointing only 2mm

Got washed out on this side of town David. (13mm last hr). Yes rumbles but didn't see the lightning. Maybe it was IC stuff. Met service tracker has picked up a few CG's. Pity we didn't see much sun today as that would have enhanced thunderstorm potential a lot.

What's up with the radar? Shows heavy rain moving over and its only been drizzle and patchy light rain.
Well it was a fizzer for east Auckland anyway. Most of the rain was supposed to be tomorrow so its not much of a loss, I wasn't expecting thunder to actually happen today anyway. At least it still goes down as a thunder day. :)

We have had a few moderate showers today and one very heavy one...enough to slow traffic right down.

Looks to be a heavy shower just to the W of me on the radar but yet i cant see any dark clouds out that way :-k
