Nice NE convergence moved back through here from about 3:30pm with a return to NE and drizzle.
Unfortunately, no ummmph to make it looks a bit more exiting.
Barometer too high for any thunder activity, well actually I can't see any thunder possibilities for ChCh for ages, at the moment, sadly :(

Yes good downpour here alright :) looked out the window and saw one bright IC flash... Driving to Mt Roskill there was quite a lot of surface flooding, seemed to be where the radar was showing the heaviest too

More Incoming now too with heavy rainfall showing over the Kaipara.. where the earlier cells seemed to really get going.. Dewpoing recently hit 20.5 !

We had a nice amount of rain overnight and into this morning here, 26mm of the stuff which should last for a week perhaps 8-[ .
It wasnt that cold though today, quite refreshing after a few days of 30C in a row.
Cheers
Jason.

I was expecting quite a dump of rain, unfortunately only 6mm overnight here, and looks to be no rain coming for at least several hours

I think you have just been very unlucky, and have had rain bands go either to the west or east of you

21mm here since yesterday, the rainguage at Massey (6km west of here) got 41mm off this sytem.

Air looks like it should remain conditionally unstable today. If we can get some decent daytime heating will see a thunderstorm or two pop up this afternoon. :) But cloud cover currently looks extensive.

Why do we need daytime heating when dew points and daytime temps are so high?

Heating from the sun raises the surface temperature which adds to the CAPE. Also, importantly, it creates thermals and gets the air rising. No sun, no thermals. Can't see the overcast breaking easily though.

it's relative to upper air temps. Current 21C and 18C dewpoints would be excellent for storms in our winter/spring enviroment.

Metservice didn't know what to do again, forecast has completely changed now to showers (I can't see those happening either) and looking like we will get pretty much no more rain for a week. :x

there will be a band of showers with the change in airmass to the lower dew point and cooler air in the S/SE change on the other side of this trough to our west

Unforecast drizzle in central Chch this morning - small yellow blob on radar over part of city, dry over rest of Canterbury. Weather seems to be brightening up now. :)

A clearance coming over Auckland now, might enhance heavy shower development?

Yesterdays storms were over the upper west of the SI.

If the moisture (dp13-15C) can hang on over the Waikato/Bay of Plenty untill this afternoon, a thunderstorm or two will pop up. Upper air will continue to cool off today. However, the drier air over the lower NI is working its way north and may kill off the convective chances.

clouds building over the kaimai ranges. looks really neat with the height of them and their sharp edges against the blue sky
