The heat of December
We seem to be having a hot month. Jeffs weather station has twice beaten its own record in the past week, and yesterday in particular was witheringly hot with 33.5 apparently- it was still 26 at 10.30pm last night.
Already back up to 27 this morning...3rd day out of 6 over 30 on the way?

Re: The heat of December
It's feeling very warm out there now.
Mind you though, the three days before yesterday were all below 20.

Re: The heat of December
I reckon it will get over 30 again...CCC and Jeff's station all showing just above 29C and still climbing...yay!
I love this weather...BEACH GOING/golf weather! (when not working, of course)...it does get a bit draining...you just have to keep hydrated, is all!

Re: The heat of December
Have just done a wee look at the December numbers, mtd, for December from Jeff's website (thanks, Jeff ):
will need to wait til eom to find out, of course!
(I assumed a high of 31.8 for today...)
Interesting to note that December is (so far, at least) shaping up to be the warmest since at least 2000...will need to wait til eom to find out, of course!

Re: The heat of December
Though if that's the max temps, would the average temps per day make a difference?
Seems to have be floating around the 31 mark for a while now.

Re: The heat of December
see attached...hasn't mad a HUGE difference, really...this december is already the warmest, based on avg temp, so far since at least 2000...gllitz wrote:...yes, I suppose they would...will have a look at that now...Inny Binny wrote:Though if that's the max temps, would the average temps per day make a difference?

You'll note there have already been 4 days with an average over 20...that is twice the amount of any of the previous years, mtd-speaking...of course, there could be massive Southerly outbreaks between now and eom and throw these figures out the window....
(PS...I assumed a 22.5 for today, but that may be a bit low...)

No, not too much of a difference.
It is looking to be a bit cooler for the next few days though - that may make a difference.

Re: The heat of December
Just having a look at the NIWA data base for maximum temperatures in Christchurch in December and we have a little way to go to break the record. As far as I can determine, the 13th December 1975 recorded 35.4C at the airport, its recorded as 35C at the gardens station.
I see Bob McDavitt is predicting a return to high nor west temperatures on the 28th and 29th Dec in his weekly emailed yachting forecast

Re: The heat of December
Still 20C here, and humidity gone up around 85%. Awful for running.
Tonight not looking good at all, probably a minimum of 17-18C if the NE breeze and cloud remains.
Definitely far warmer than last December (well obviously because last December was extremely cool), at this point in the month the average overnight low is 4.7C higher than it was at the same point last December. Overall average for the month to date is 3.6C higher than at the same time last month, and quite noticeable too. The difference between the maximums for the month to date is 2.4C higher this December. Highest temperature of 23.4C last December has already been equaled or exceeded on 7 days this December (but only within 0.7C higher, so quite consistent). This December approximately twice as wet so far.
If this warm nights trend continues all summer then we could see a few minima of 20C in Auckland, highest minimum last summer was 19.6C and the summer before that 20.5C. It would be nice to know what Auckland's highest overnight minimum is, if anyone knows?

In a colder than normal month, more memorable for a 'white' Christmas in NZ. Shows how changeable our weather can be, even in summer. As far as I can determine, the 13th December 1975 recorded 35.4C at the airport, its recorded as 35C at the gardens station.
