When does a Weather Data Year End

Unread post by arthurhh »

Well I had not thought about this till now with the calender end of Year coming up.
On what date does a weather year end, when does yearly rainfall etc reset to zero.
Now if we weather folk roll the weather data at 9am not midnight and fiscal folk count 31 march as end of year I would not be surprised to find an oddity in the answer to my question.

I honestly don't know? I'm going with 9am January 1st since that's when I have everything set to reset. Perhaps shoot off an email to BoM/NIWA or MS though...

Climatologists take the rain for the 24 hours ending 9am on 1st Jan (NZDT) as applying to 31st Dec. The maximum temperature reading made at 9am 1st Jan is applied to 31st Dec , and the minimum reading to 1st Jan. So the rollover is 9am 1st January (NZDT) .

I would have assumed it was 9am for NZ
but i think though Australia for the year change uses midnight (but any other month is 9am)
but I could be wrong (i remember a discussion about this and input from Aus meterologists on another forum some years ago)
