If you have a good view of the city, you can see a very strange formation this late afternoon.
There is a wall cloud what looks like 100km away, stretching round to the northwest, to the west, till the other end of it curves round to right beside us! Quite a nice view!

I think you saw a band of thick cirrus. I noticed it had just started coming in late afternoon.
