What about the sky this morning! I'm sure I was just woken up by some thunder - maybe i'm going mad?

Excuse my posting from last night, just gets rather frustrating when you havnt seen a decent storm in a long time. :) .
Change arrived just after midnight last night, with brief steady rain and a strong gusty SW.
It will be interesting to see what 2008 brings.
Cheers
Jason.

Thats OK Jason. It's getting frustrating for a lot of Canterbury Storm Chasers with this weather. Toooo La Nina-ish for my liking that is why I can't see any thunderstorms in the forseeable future for us here, sadly.
Surface pressures too high. No twists in atmospheric patterns to encourage a instability scenario for thunderstorm development here in Canterbury,sadly...and there is nothing much in the future judging by models :(

Just on Sundays thunderstorm chances in the South Island, it looks a no show unless you live in the Fiordland.
The models have suggested maybe a low risk for SE Otago but there would have to be a proper sea breeze and daytime heating and niether looks very likely with gradient suggesting a southwest flow will kick in ahead of the colder upper air.
Canterbury will get the NE but the colder upper level change comes in way too late in the day.

Bring on a thunderstormy 2008!

Warm at Dunedin Airport this morning with 22C at 7am! Looking at the situation this morning I would say a thunderstorm or two is possible in Southland as well as Fiordland with that front.

Should be a warm day over much of the country today. An afternoon SW breeze for AK by the looks.
