Re: Not So Hot After All spell for eastern SI mid Jan

Unread post by Razor »

Lol I was thinking before if it was winter time and a predicted maximum of 10 degrees in ChCh ended up being 2 degrees then this site would be seeing a fair amount of activity! :D

Having said that, the metservice site is currently reporting Timaru as hottest in NZ at 35 degrees
Is there anyone down that way who can report theirs?

Seems like the low 20s in Somerfield / Spreydon area of Christchurch. Need to get myself a cheap thermometer set here (Almost 17 and no part time job) Feels like a nice day, I'm so glad its not like that Sunday a few weeks ago, that was the hottest day this summer so far and seemed by a fair bit too in my opinion, no thermometer so couldn't see what temperature was causing me to be drenched in sweat from going for a short walk

Odd thing is that Timaru Airport was 35 and yet Timaru Gardens were 26 today.Quite a difference.

Looks like a bit of very low cloud going past my house at the moment, or maybe Christchurch in general

Sea breeze perhaps. On occasions the Levels airport will have a much higher max. than the town, though 30-year averages show little difference overall, summer or winter, with the Gardens site being slightly higher in summer and lower in winter (not quite what one might expect). On the famous 7/2/1973, the airport reached 39.8C, but the town's monthly maximum was "only" 37.3, on the 3rd.

Interesting dispersal of temps at 1pm --> 25 in Dunedin, 26 Manapouri, 20s throughout Otago and Southland, then from Christchurch all the way to Gisborne just measly 18s and 16s.

Went outside for a few minutes and it wasn't uncomfortably hot. I think the sunday I went for a walk and came back drenched in sweat has increased my heat tolerance :)

If only it were that simple
You'd think after often going running when the temperature is at 20 to 22C I wouldn't feel hot at all on a day like today (max 23.2C here), but no. I dread a day when we get 27C.
It probably doesn't feel repulsively hot down there because of the extremely low humidity...33C temp with 1C dew point at 1pm at Christchurch airport. Only 22 to 23C here but dewpoints around 13C.
