Re: Is It Hot Or Is It Not spell for eastern SI mid Jan
Another warm one alright almost too warm to work, i am not sure what the cut off temperature when working is in NZ but anything 34C or more people should stop work.
Especailly those who work in the outdoors in the heat of the sun, not in front of air conditioners and cold tap water.
I know in Australia the cut off temperature is 31C when everyone stops work and goes home, although its a different type or heat to ours and they can actually afford to stop work over there with a much better pay rate .
First swing around the SW which came at around 5pm didnt do anything to the temperature which is what you felt Ryan, but the second wave which is now a much cooler, strong southerly has dropped the temperature.
Might be a shower or two on the way just yet.
Cheers
Jason.

Sorry to disappoint you folks but no thunder activity is likely for Canterbury this summer with the current weather activity and the La Nina weather pattern upon us
There were a few lightnining strikes recorded with today's cold front around the north-eastern Otago region which I was quite surprised to hear about.
Just enjoy this hot and non-eventful summer weather while it lasts.

If the cut off temp was 31 Jase I would have only worked 3 days in the last 98.
Different type of heat, yes far worse,36.5 today with a 25 dewpoint, heat index of 42,looking forward to a dry Canterbury heat in February when back for a holiday.

that must have been a good Southerly change...I see Jeff had 51kmh and the airport had a 10 minute average of 30 kts

I think the NW wind was just as strong on and off during the day and gusty for the hour before the change.

Perhaps for rain but not for heat and 31C is not hot weather over there.I know in Australia the cut off temperature is 31C when everyone stops work and goes home,

Hi guys – can someone explain please – how you get lightning & thunder without any cloud base ???
Last night at 9pm was very unusual. There was a very thin layer of haze like cloud cover came over (it was still approx 25c and then lightning flashes started. As you have probably heard, lightning strike caused a Pine plantation fire near Blenheim, that fill the inner Pelorus sound with smoke just on dark, also making strange visual effects.

The forecasters are struggling again today...cloudy periods forecast but a look out the window might let them know to "nowcast" steady drizzle/ light rain for the past couple of hours!gllitz wrote:"now"casting at its finest....Razor wrote:And I see the metservice have now revised from 27 to 31. MetService's brief forecasts can certainly be brief - I guess they think this drizzle is only going to last this morning and they're thinking more of this afternoon and through tomorrow. The forecasters are struggling again today...cloudy periods forecast but a look out the window might let them know to "nowcast" steady drizzle/ light rain for the past couple of hours!

Good 'Drizzle-Drop' at work this morning. I recorded 3.3mm in the rain-gauge there,(Halswell) in the hour or so period it drizzled.
Obviously a convergence effect.

Re: Is It Hot Or Is It Not spell for eastern SI mid Jan
Yeah i was also rather surprised about yesterday morning, as no drizzle was forcast, and it nearly affected work!!
Good thing was we didnt stop working
mm weather has been hot and this summer already had 7 days over 30 witch must be one of the hottest summers surely? However its not very exciting "extreme weather" wise.

I think it's a bit early for these conclusions:
http://www.stuff.co.nz/4365419a11.html
The summer of 2002-03 featured a lot of dry settled weather, in many places spanning Dec-March inclusive.

Yes, it is early days as the memorable summers in the North Island occur mid January to late April so our summer should be just starting. What if Feb/Mar are wet!

I consider December to be more a spring month in Auckland with our summer running well into March

Considering this sample list, many places - mostly in the north and west of the North Is. - are justified in considering March to be more of a summer month than December, even with less daylight and sunshine.
It shows the difference in monthly mean temps. (March minus December)

Interesting figures there.
Interesting to see Wanaka still on 32C at 7pm this evening! They have certainly had some hot temps in central Otago this January but atleast they get the cool off at night to escape the heat. Good diurnal contrasts.
