are justified in considering March to be more of a summer month than December, even with less daylight and sunshine.
Also March weather is more settled than that of December, usually.

Got up to 33.8C here earlier on but now 31C with the sun dissapearing under an arch moving in.
Also currently two big srub, grass fires at the moment one near Swananoa and the other near the Ashley bridge just north of Rangiora.
As well as the one next to hagley park.
These strong NWers wont be helping, however looks like rain is a coming just how much is the question.
Cheers

We thought it was some kind of controlled burn from our view here on Show Place...I guess it wasn't! :(
Looks to be under control now...was impressive there, for a wee while...

Horrible hot day here at West Melton but the southerly arrived at 4:30pm with a gradual decrease in temperature.
Now only 18.2ºC, an hour after the southerly hit.
This is quite normal after a SW change from warm weather.

Gusty to near gale force southerly at times here at the moment, well has been for about 30mins now and still going usually its a quick shibang and its all over.
But I guess the land is rather dry and warm from todays heat, so the wind will rush inland quite strong.
Time for that Rain dance i think :-k .

No rain at all overnight, front looked to have weakoned considerably as it headed up the island.
Next hope is Monday but even that looks to be about as good of a risk as yesterday.
We might have to wait until late march to see any major rainfalls again i think.

I see on the news that Picton had a mini-tornado yesterday [-X - ducking for cover.
It was estimated to be four-storeys high :)

There was no tornado in Picton on Tuesday; it was most likely just a whirl-wind or eddy coming off the hills in the strong southeasterly flow. Radar images at the time show no showers in the area, and satellite images just show broken stratocumulus around the Marlborough coast. The situation was also very stable.

I was just going by the newspaper reports, yes I know that conditions weren't the ones needed for tornadic activity.

The problem with reports in the media like this, is that they tend to become 'historical fact'. It was published by a respected media source, and most people believe what they read, both now and when looking back from sometime in the future. I'm sure 99% of New Zealanders now believe a tornado struck Picton on Tuesday! I really hope this doesn't turn up in NIWA's monthly summary as a "tornado"...

Those eddies/rotors are a common sight in the Sounds, especially on the water.

Always check information if possible - I discovered decades ago that the Met Service's "normals to 1950" had some errors of arithmetic in calculating the sunshine means (never saw the detail data to see if the same was true of temperature and rainfall).

I noticed watching TVNZ tonight Dunedins max temp was 32C. Contrast this with the forecast max of 22C, a 10C error there!!!

Met Service need to decide who they are forecasting temperatures for at Dunedin, the city or the rural environs!
