Sure has been hot this year. Out of the 20 days this year 13 have been 27oC or above and 2 of them were over 30oC. Then only 2 maximums have been below 25.8oC and even they werent cold on 22.7oC and 24.7oC.
So cant really complain about not having a summer this year.

yes, we normaly get coastal sea breezes here (SW wind),which keeps the max temp at this time of year to 25oC, and we dont have much land mass to heat up either in this part of NZ
so its the SE or Northerly winds that give us our hottest temperatures, at this time of year, (I have recorded 31oC before in a northerly), i.e the wind is coming over alot of land mass

edit, I just checked, and I actualy record 28.4oC on the 28th Jan last year.....opps

How much fohn effect do you get in Auckland on a fresh to strong East/SouthEasterly.
Temps in the Ak area have been up to 26 or 27C today with not a great deal of sunshine.

Should see some hot temperatures right across the country tomorrow. The day should be brighter in Auckland too with temps into the high 20's, possibly 30C. Quite misty tonight with the stratus deck almost at ground level.

I see thunder storms are forcast for the end of the week. Are they going to be grunters or nothing special?

:o Last night was the warmest I've recorded! The minimum was 21.3C, and it was a low of 25C in my room (don't know why I wasn't hot?). I see the Whangarei station had a low of 22.4C so this system has brought extremely tropical air indeed.

Skies clearing now, temp still only 23 but should start rising. I see metservice suggest some heavy showers (moderate risk) through this way this afternoon. :) The chart say mod. risk of storms but the text says no storms, how contradicting :?

This is what their text says: 'Over the North Island, a wind convergence line is expected to develop from southeastern Northland, through eastern parts of Auckland and down to about Tokoroa. Rather than thunderstorms (too warm aloft), there is a moderate risk of some towering cumulus delivering some persistent heavy showers along the zone and rainfall rates may reach 10-20mm/hr in some places.'
Yet the chart has thunderstorms moderate risk over us.

The problem is that our chart drawing tool has the word Thunderstorm hard wired into the headings for an area. For the time being, the only way of handling the situation is to draw an area as you see and then qualify and comment on the area in the text. We want to signal significant convection in a concentrated area where thunderstorms are not involved. That is why the charts are labelled "Severe Convection/Thunderstorm Outlook".

So what we are trying to signal is the very heavy rain which may cause problems. We do need to address this issue.

Hey! We made the news in Weather terms... well in the forecast as a pointer

Wind up over 20km/hr now, gusting to 57, but still warm and no real rain, heavy broken cloud cover... 27.1/20.7ºC T/DP

Forecast:- "Occasional showers, risk heavy. Northerlies, easing."

Tokoroa that is... ;)

Another uncomfortable day, the low of 21.3C was bad enough but then the temperature got up to 27.6C just before 5pm (thanks to the NW wind change), and dew points were 19C to 23C all day as well. I'm picking a low of around 18 tonight, now that the wind has lost its easterly component. Our average temperature so far this month of 20.6C is 1.5C higher than last January (which did have a cold start, min-max on 1st was 7.2-17.8 ). I've recorded 4 maximums over 27.0C this month (and summer), no doubt we'll get a few in February.

Dense fog and misty rain as we came over the top of the Kaimais at 12:30am this morning, clear at the base (returning safely from an impromptu 25th or Silver Anniversary). I measured 21.7mm of rain yesterday, that's a good top-up for the Sth Waikato farmers. So long as it stays cloudy and the blue skies don't return too soon... mild and muggy overnight, hard to sleep..

Lovely fresh day here now. Monday reached 29.2C at Kelburn, which I think is the highest there since 30.1C in 1982.

Perhaps, but not at Kelburn - checking the records, the Dec. highest there is 29.1 on 28/12/1948 - 1 Dec 2001 reached 26.7.

Few clouds building to the SE at the moment. Big bases but not getting big lift. I cant see them eventuating to thunderstorms, but any thing could happen.
