Dry and hot, North Island, January

Unread post by Willoughby »

Was pretty hot yesterday despite the cloudy conditions, up to 26C with the sun doing real damage when it broke through late afternoon.

It's 22/18 already here, so could head for some two-year record highs here this afternoon past 28C.
Tomorrow's rain looks like it will be convectively enhanced by daytime heating... dewpoints around 21C over the upper North Island and 19C around Wellington which could mean sea fog there with rain.
Residual moisture on Wednesday could lead to a few possible thunderstorms over Northland-BoP.

I see the dew point has already reached 20C at Grey Lynn, temperature almost 25C here, could have been a scorcher had the NE not freshened up. Still will probably reach 26C, if so will be warmest day so far this summer.
Looks to me like tonight is going to be most dreadful, probably 19C (at least) minimum overnight, it was 18.6C last night and that was bad enough.

Maybe the Grey Lynn dps are reading a bit high, but the dp's are on the rise and yes should be 20C tomorrow. Wednesday is looking like a possible thunderstorm day over the North Island but its a fickle situation given the very warm upper air.

In my whole week in the Auckland/North Auckland area, I experienced no more that a few spits of of rain on the afternoon of the 1st at Muriwai. Unusually long dry spell for the area?

DP been bouncing around here, currently at 19.5 :)

yes, it has been an unusualy long dry spell for the time of year....best spell of weather for the holiday season period in a long time!

Grass is starting to brown off around here quickly (there is no reserve in the ground as every month has been below average rain for a while now)
looks like we should get some usefull rain tomorrow...then maybe in another week?

The temperature at Tawa was down today (20.9 max), and we've certainly had a goodly amount of rain (24 mm to 11 p.m.) which has cheered the trees and shrubs up!
Not a bad interlude after 9 summery days without rain. =D>

Yes a minimum of 19.5C overnight and humid in the east too, 21C right now.
I see some parts had lows of just above 20C, and parts of Waikato also had lows over 19C, so a very warm night indeed.
The rain on the way looks mainly light with some moderate falls, due to its slow sluggish nature we should see some decent rain today/tonight, great after 11 days with no rain, but will be bad humidity-wise - could see minimums of 19-20C again tonight, with rain #-o

11.06 am RR shows a nice rain band heading towards auckland (bout 50kms away I geuss at the mo).

This will hopefully bring some welcome relief to Brian and also the rest of auckland.

I was in Taumarunui for sundee/mondee of this week and at 11pm on sundee night the ambient air temp was 27 deg C 8-[

the humidity was just tooooo much

Along with its humidity, it's a very cloudy climate as well.

Looks like our first rain band which is still on its way has weakened somewhat :?
Forecast for possible heavy falls this evening through tonight, hopefully will eventuate, as it looks to be dry for a period of time after this brief wet episode.

I hate how in weather watches or warnings how they say 'northern auckland' but don't mention the rest of Auckland. :x
They could say: e.g. 60-80mm possible for northern Auckland and 40mm in other parts. That would be more informative.

No rain here yet either. Each rain band that comes in weakens as it gets closer to the coast :(. If we dont get any real rain out of this system it does not look healthy for the farm. The dry November and December are really starting to make their point, and with the good possibility of a dry Janurary it might be a shortened season...BUT its still early days yet.

Wouldnt mind knowing how to get ahold of that high res RR :-k

Jamie,

I have access to metservices' metconnect thru my work colleagues.

This allows me to view up to the minute RR's for all of NZ plus a few other things so a very handy tool especially for meso-scale events

It's stopped raining at Tawa now. 24 mm yesterday, 21 mm so far today.
A cracker summertime reprieve.
We might get a little more later before we return to fine days.
Let's hope it treats northerners similarly and provides a bit of pasture growth etc.

Still only 1mm here. Only 0.5mm this afternoon/evening :?
To me it looks like that rain band is going to miss Auckland completely and we'll be stuck with a bit of drizzle, unless the band moves south, which is not happening at the moment. Maybe I'm wrong???

I was only ever expecting about 5-10mm out of this system, but was not only expecting 1.5mm. I cant see much more falling now with the band moving off the country. What rain band were MS expecting to give the upper NI alot of rain? I agree with david and it looks like there is nothing more unless it all shifts south.

At least it is slighty cooler tonight than it was last night.. make for a better sleep. Sitting on 18 at the moment.
