Re: Tropical Cyclone FUNA
depends where you see the center, its hard to tell on infrared. id go with S-SSW right now.
edit: some images to look at on this page
edit again: make that SSW definately now.

Yer...
The "eye" - or what's left of it, is pretty clear here but I haven't been tracking it so I cant tell if it's made it's turn.

If your picking S-SSW then it probably has started to swing...

Re: Tropical Cyclone FUNA
yea using my eyes, i realise ive been looking in the wrong place for the center, its defaintely almost SW now. now i see that it seems to have thrown a large part of its SE quadrant down to us D) , which i thought was nearer the center and threw me off.
funny how clear the center seems when you finally see it
that would make this a very good match for the models so far then.
edit: look out norfolk island!

Re: Tropical Cyclone FUNA
Here's an extract of a poem I wrote concerning TC Funa
Cyclone Funa , a bit of a spooner
for what you are worth.
We need more of you to come sooner
to replenish the soil of our earth.
La Nina conditions have come to stay
Well, for a little while
then
we are dry down New Zealand way so show us what you are worth.
Please no Nw gales
Or dry southerlies to tease
We need good rain to soak our earth
And no damage to property
For what it is worth.

Re: Tropical Cyclone FUNA
Wind has pretty much died here. Had a about 2 spits of rain here before .
Had some neat cloud formations just this side of the kaimai ranges this afternoon. I suspect they were from the strong easterly winds coming over the ranges which were making the neat formations.

Re: Tropical Cyclone FUNA
Looks rather patchy light rain over the Auckland area at the moment, It could well increase yet just never know.
I am picking areas like Hanmer Springs could get some big gusts from the N-NW on Tuesday afternoon, otherwise gale winds everywhere else with some welcome rain hopefully atleast a good 10-20mm would be good.
South Canty might get a few heavy falls Depressions like this are hard to predict until they actually happen.
Fresh to strong NE here all day with some nice waves around the estruary and Sumner way, a kite surfers dream day.
Cheers
Jason.

Re: Tropical Cyclone FUNA
There have been 21 months in the Chch record with <4.2mm, the most recent being in Feb 2001. So, thats about a 7 year return period - not that unusual. Its when you get two in a row it starts to get interesting...

Re: Tropical Cyclone FUNA
Very still here at Tawa now. The day's high temp of 27.8 was late at 4:03 p.m.
Humidity began climbing again at 5 p.m. (now 85%) and the temperature slid down during the evening to 18.
Dewpoint now 15.6
Took the opportunity to give the grounds a good soaking late evening to give them a head start on soaking up tomorrow's rain, just in case this ornery cyclone decides to hang around longer than planned. Wouldn't want to waste a wet bonus in run-off.

Re: Tropical Cyclone FUNA
i think the satellite did one of its lurches which made it look like it stopped
but it certainly has slow down alot and is now moving more south to SSW
and a nice front rain band is sliding over northland now from the NE, and slowly moving down into the auckland area , so alot of rain still to come

Re: Tropical Cyclone FUNA
Any rain helps. We had 2.6mm last hr in Grey Lynn. Thats a soaking by this summers standards!
I don't see much opportunity for thunderstorms in this system unless we get some hot temperatures over land. The low will pass over Canterbury early tomorrow afternoon southerly buster which could be thundery if temperatures get hot enough.
Looking ahead convection wise, I am seeing a good chance of thunderstorms/hail for east Otago/Dunedin on Wednesday afternoon as a pulse of polar air moves through, these may make it into south Canterbury. And we might be lucky to see some thunderstorms over the Waikato Thursday afternoon.
Did anyone else notice TV1 broadcast the wrong forecast temps last night, they must have been from another day.
The giveaway was a forecast min of 15C at Whangarei etc.

Re: Tropical Cyclone FUNA
Not even half a damn mm here yet. Does look like (very tropical looking low clouds) at the moment if it heats up there will be heavy convective showers. Just saw on breakfast auckland is getting nice rain.

Re: Tropical Cyclone FUNA
i cant see that its going to be crossing canterbury tomorrow..maybe more central NZ late tomorrow?
it has slowed down too much...which is good for us....as it means this rain band is going to hang around
Raining very nicely here now
