Showers/storms in Canterbury 23rd pm?

Unread post by tich »

Heard of a thunderstorm in Oamaru this afternoon, and radar shows a small band of precipitation moving north and reaching about Rakaia by 8pm. Latest MetService forecast is for showers with isolated thunder and hail for Canterbury north from Rangitata this vening.
I can see quite alot of cloud to the west, but no showers have reached central Chch yet.

Yes. I have been keeping a constsnt eye to the south from here in West Mellton.
Been taking some photos which I will put up later.
Sadly the CB forms were much weak with too many early glacuationing within them.

I noticed the strikes down south earlier, as there was a few! and first thing i thought hello whats going on here"
Does appear to be unstable out there but like you say John alot of glaciating
One positive its still NE out there well... in my part ahead of this SW so its coming against the SW

Invercargill sounding today had a thickness of 5375! Thats an airmass more typical of July. Very nippy for mid January.

I was actually very surprised how quickly it all developed, I went outside to see if I could veiw the Cell futher south but nothing but low cloud.
Then about 40mins later went outside and Unstable CU above with some nice looking dark bases all over the show.
Pitty a storm didnt rock on up, just the timing was not quite right if it had of been around 5-6pm maybe a different story.
The SW change must be a weak one as it hasnt arrived here yet, still NE.
Cheers

Could be isolated thundery showers inland tomorrow, more or so north Canterbury foothills northwards into Marlborough,Nelson area.
This provided there is a relative amount of daytime heating, unlike today which was overcast for much of the day.
Typical summer like build ups inland, something we havnt seen yet this summer.
It will be nice to see some of those clouds towering into the sky along the NW horizon with a blue dome backdrop hopefully :) .
Cheers

Don't think there will be any thunderstorms, unless there is a big dip in the atmosphere, , or a sudden return to El Nino conditions [-X :?:
Too warm, surface pressures tooo high, etc

Looks good for showers over central NZ today due to cool moist unstable air in the lower levels of the atmos. Daytime heating will set off the t/cu. The thunder risk looks low though and if there is a risk it would be in the west where sea breezes could converge with the low level E flow. Should see isolated evening showers further north over the Waikato too from low topped cu build ups.

There was some thunder, well lightning strikes reported today in one or two regions of the NW South Island today.
SG's lightning recorded located way out in the Tasman sea but I think they may have been a bit closer than that.
I'd say that they would of been weak despite the evidence of a weak trough lurking in the area.
However, good to see that in boring anticyclonic conditions. :)
Interesting to see if any heavy falls were recorded.
Might be heavy falls in inland areas tomorrow, but I don't think so, would be if surface pressures were lower.
