(Non weather expert here) I have been watching this system since it was a low off Fiji.
My question for the weather experts. How good are the weather models at modelling the tracks of Tropical Cyclones in La Nina episodes ?
Is the data set more limited than El Nino conditions ?

Re: Tropical Cyclone Gene
Given the short history of modelling in meteorology and the fact that modelling has changed so much in the last 20 years I would say there is not much of a reliable history.
Looking at the models Gene is set to become another extraordinary mid lattitude storm just east of NZ in the next few days. I'm guessing it could direct some big swells onto eastern NZ coasts.
