You mean 35 years ago. And yes, it hasn't come close to being beaten - ignoring all the spurious claims made on forums and media generally.

Recently I heard Bob McDavitt on his weekly? afternoon weather spot on National Radio. He quoted some temperatures that had been reached this summer, and on saying Oamaru had had a day around the 30 mark, the host suggested that might be about as hot as it ever got there. Bob was rushed into agreeing, more or less. Er, no... on 7/2/73 Iona Hospital there got to 37.4C and Oamaru Aero to 37.7C, the latter being very close to old magic figure of 100F.

And of importance...where and by whom/what (probing here...i.e. Was it a reliable and accurate measurement?)...just curious to know... 8-[ 8-[

Wonder what the highest Heat Index has been in NZ before.. I know the highest ever was 80 degrees! I know Canada has hit 51 or so... Wondering what NZ's would be.. But Canada uses something called a "humidex" don't know if its calculated differently.. And I think I saw someone recently saying they had a heat index of 41 in auckland?

Michael I have this book too.. but in that article it says 'Wanganui 41.2C' so i'm guessing this is a major error. It does state 'Twenty South Island weather stations and one in the North Island exceeded previous temperatures recorded'. I'm inclined to think this was actually Ruatoria in Eastland?

The Wanganui reading is definitely in error, if Wanganui actually recorded 41.2oC then New Plymouth, Palmerston North etc would have recorded the same. Previous high was 38.4oC at Ashburton on 19/1/1956.

I read in the microfilmed Press that the southerly dropped temperatures by about 20C in Chch later in the day, with the that wind reaching severe gale and causing some damage. Apparently it wasn't really a strong southerly airflow, but the heat followed by massive drop in temperature must've caused the winds to become very strong.

Also of interest, 3 years later (Feb 1976), daytime temperatures on this day (give or take a few days) were at near record lows for February in a cold, wet south or southeast flow, with Wellington only reaching about 9 or 10C!

Think the highest in Wanganui about 31 or 32.In a N flow Wanganui usually betters PN by a degree or two and NP by about up to 8°
