lasted about 10 minutes!
from only a small looking CU too!
first photo is when I first noticed it...as a funnel cloud...and I thought, yeah, right....but it pesisted...and then you could easily see the dark funnel of the waterspout, at its best, half way down!....would have been great to have seen the sea surface from the coastline!
and then a 2nd small funnel started to form to the right of the first one, under the darker flater lower base of the cloud! (but did not last long)
The clouds are moving slowly down from the WNW, but at the surface we have a fresh breeze (W)...so there is some of the needed shear!

nice picture there. Amazed that that smaller cu produced that. If you sent that to the paper i could just amagine the headline "mini tordnado hits" hahaha

Can you crop the high res original so we can get a better look at it.
I have seen them develop out of smaller Cu. I think funnel clouds will be quite common in the Auckland area but due to their small size and short life they go mostly unnoticed.

I really needed a better camera...
also, it was a Marlin fishing contest off the coast today (64 boats went over the Bar!)
and I was just talking to of the fisherman as they came ashore down at the beach just now...and they saw it alright!
