Kawerau gets hot afternoons from November to feb because of its
slightly inland position and the fact that it is in the sheltered BOP.
Often in Nov and Dec a heat low develops over the Waikato which
accentuates the southwester across the Auckland region.
We are getting into the time of year now when the insolation levels (UV) are dropping and so it would be unusual for BOP to be much warmer than
Auckland.
This is the time of year too, when the South island starts dropping into winter but summer hangs on in the north. The real climate advantage that
Auckland/Northland have over the rest of NZ. Christcurch temperature range today was 2C to 14C, Auckland 15C to 22C. By the end of April
the southern regions will be experiencing sleet with very cold night time temps while the north will still be mild to warm.
Cheers

Yes Steven, dropping into winter alright,I had to scrape the ice off my windscreen at 5.00am this morning before heading off to work.
The winterless north will now start to get the daily temperature highs instead of Alexandra/Ashburton/Napier etc over summer.
Another cool night tonight on the cards, current temp 8.5 and dropping.
Cheers.

It was quite funny when Augie Auer was doing the weather on TV3 and Kawerau quite often got the nation's max for the day.Michael wrote:Why does Kardedau(how its said on tv3)keep getting the maximum with even all this cloud?
With his accent, he couldn't quite get the name right and it was Kawerra one day or Karwehow the next.
