If you believe that April Fools ends at midday, so if the possibility of thunderstorms look likely for the afternoon, then it is all on
If it does happen, I'll have to send Paul Mallison, my special thunderstorm underpants

Will depend on how much of that moisture can hang back before the late afternoon SW change. You don't want the prefontal NW to get to aggressive and blow it all out to sea.

Thunder doesn't look very likely in Canterbury today. Looks good for the West Coast and perhaps coastal Southland.

Should still be some showers with the change, the hail would only occur if the clouds got thundery.

Looks like the southerly has arrived and is quite gusty. Has clouded over, but it's still dry in central Chch.

According to MS there has been some activity in south canterbury, but has most likly died off now i would think as per the high risk for storms .
4pm radar showed red isolated blotches, but it doesnt look like a thundery type sky really maybe a few bits of CU here and there.
Westerly came in with a bang around 4:30pm dust everywhere on the road zero visability and headlights, still no SW yet though.
Cheers
Jason.

A bit of a thunderstorm reported to the south of here around the back of BP out to sea around 4pm but nothing really outstanding.
I was wondering where about a tornado would pop up with this weak-active system.
Seems like Ngakawau was the 'lucky' town.

I think it is more than just a bit of a thunderstorm John.
I'm currently looking at the lightning activity using Metconnect from home and it shows lots of lightning in south Canterbury mainly in an elongated area west to east about 30-40% of the way between Christchurch and Timaru. Radar shows area of rain with some strong embedded echoes. Ashburton has just reported 24mm in the last hour!

And the most recent radar from M/S would indicate we're gonna get something (fingers crossed) within the hour, I would say....just hope it doesn't wake the kidsPaul Mallinson wrote:I think it is more than just a bit of a thunderstorm John.
