there is a CB line developed already west of northland...same place as yesterday morning...
and with this new stuff moving down from the north....northland and auckland are in the firing line again this afternoon!
17.3 DP here (and foggy), once we get some sun and warming, that should increase, so potential for big dumps of rain!

Yes nice and sharp looking too. Notice that between 8am and 9am it did not move one bit... but intensified greatly.

Amazing how long i can spend watching the weather when i have nothing else to do :D

What a terrible tragic time.

We'd have to go back to the Wahine Storm to find a day where weather related events led to so many deaths in New Zeland.

Truly awful, not a good day for the populace to get excited about more storms coming

there was heavy rain warnings in place for days out before hand, and severe thunderstorm warnings too, and tuesday always looked to be the day for heavy rain...so its not like the public were not warned.....and I said the day before, its a dynamicly changing weather pattern and the public will need to keep up with the very latest forecasts.....a good way would actualy be too follow threads on this forum even...so I think its good that people keep on following and reporting on the next round of developments Razor

On a day like yesterday with such severe rain and lightning we need a weather bulletin on all television channels and radio stations. A bit like the American weather channel. A simple 5 min update on TV with what the latest warnings were and where they were for. Maybe show a radar loop so people can see what’s been happening and showing where the lightning is at the time. It’s not often we have such severe weather but I do think it is time NZ government invests into something like I have just stated. The metservice does do well warning but the warnings are not always made public very well. To me there is a bit of a communication break down between metservice and the public.

Here here...I remember growing up as a kid in the States you would see messages come flashing across the bottom of the TV screen for Severe Weather watches and warnings (t'storms, flood, tornadoes, etc) Even something as *simple*(?) as that would be good to have in these types of situations...surely it wouldn't be that hard to implement?

I see the dewpoints are back up to 19C here. If we get some daytime heating that will crank up the instability.

some small towering Cu around but a thickening high cloud sheet

People who do canoeing etc down river canyons should make them selfs aware of current weather and forecasts before they go out, it's very easy to do.

Thunderstorms looking like a no-show today...was thinking they would with the high DP's, but doesn't look likely now.
Supposed to get rain and heavy falls this evening and overnight, can't really see any heavy rain moving down towards Auckland at the moment, just drizzle/light rain.

What's people's thoughts on tomorrow's chance of thunder?

it is starting to change David now, and things are going to start happening more than they have
as the parent low in the tasman keeps drifiting NNW, its dragging now an area of active CB's to our east our way...

seems to be we are in between 2 focal points...a new frontal boundary just west of the far north, and another one moving into the BOP... but we might get some of that action overnight , in the auckland area...

the wind sheer is fairly substantial.. lower level air being sucked from the E, and jetstream coming down hard from the N. i see a good amount of convection up north, and rainful to go with it, but dont forsee it coming this way. heres hoping something develops on top of us in auckland!

What's people's thoughts on tomorrow's chance of thunder?
We are in with a chance of a thunderstorm tomorrow. We do need the sun out to crank up the instability values. The upper air will be cooling tomorrow afternoon but the surface flow will be going westerly. That westerly breeze will be the negative as it will reduce the dewpoint and help keep surface temps down. And does look like a front/SW change will come in iin the evening. We'll just have to see how the day pans out.

BOP will be getting lots of rain at the moment ....
we got some as that front moved down from north...
should get some more showers today as a trough line out to the west moves across...
because the rain so far has only gone into bone dry soil about 3 cm....and with strong cold drish SW winds all next week.....

Yes, we need the day time heating today for thunderstorms which we should get.

The first shot of real Autumn weather comming up for the North with that dry cool flow moving in, we will notice the change of air. Currently 17C, dewpoint 16C.

just been talking to farmers on the coast side here, and they recorded 100mm over this rain event!
(the white out torrential rain that we got here at 2pm tuesday they had for a longer period further west of me (lasted about 10 minutes at that rate (which I recorded 7.5mm per minute (but it did not last as long here)), so they potentialy got 50mm in 10 minutes (as they received 50mm more than me in total)
just to give an example of the extreme rain events that occured in places that afternoon!

South Wester here now so the thunderstorm risk is out to our east today where you have a better chance of warming

Down in Hamilton for a very sporty weekend. Tonight, Huntly has a really good night at the speedway. Friday night, I scored myself a corporate box ticket for the Chiefs Crusaders match. In addition, have the v8s on Saturday and Sunday.

Nice and sunny here. Kind of feels like a spring day. Just having a glance around it looks and feels like isolated thunderstorms this afternoon. Especially now that the sun is out warming things up.

Had a very heavy burst of rain at some stage during the night here in Hamilton. Not long lasting but very heavy. Heard it pounding down on the roof.
